2000AD / Judge Dredd

@Rodders & @Vince W ; it was an 'enhanced web novel' (not graphic novel) with sound effects, music (which I could never use professionally unless I sought copyrights), and detailed appendices (including background chapters). I hammered the whole thing out in roughly 2-months and took it to an alpha-version, posting it on another writer's forum I'm on for review.

@Rodders ; you say you would, though after spending the last year+ here and all I've learned, I'd be embarrassed, hehe. I've learned a staggering amount here and improved tremendously. It's posted elsewhere in its alpha-form, but you'd likely view it as the attempts of a child.

@Vince W ; As to submitting it, I had some discussions with 2000AD/Rebellion staff regarding copyrights--as a fan fiction--then stopped. My initial intent was to clean it up, and if I received some positive feedback from Dredd fans, then possibly submit it to Rebellion... BUT... Dredd fans it became rather clear (on the 2000AD forum), didn't want the story made plausible--plausible where I changed NONE of the Eustace Fargo story, but where I filled in gaps to make it a definitely possible reality. In fact, the idea made some a little/lot angry, hehe.

So, I said forget that. Dredd fans don't want it, non-Dredd fans might enjoy the story, but the turn around to get it back to Fargo building the street judge system didn't sit with non-Dredd readers that well. I essentially had to totally destroy America, then bring it back, to justify the SJ system. Anywho... that's when I decided to write my series, using Lest ye be Judged~G9 as the second novel in a series. In the process, spending time here and improving my skills, I wrote a prequel to that novel (The Abolitionist~G8), and significantly expanded the story which will run a novel or two past G9. LybJ I'll need to make the appropriate changes to (basically just changing Fargo's name I used once, and removing the term 'street judge,' also used once... oh, and snippets of Fargo's speeches). No longer constrained, I can also improve and expand it significantly.

Thanks for the comments guys!

This is good in places.

Yes, I read that and bits of the other Judges ones they have (Avalanche coincidentally coming out once I finished my rough). However, they again didn't address the (watch me get everyone mad :sneaky: <weg>) flaws in the Origins/Fargo story, and would have run after mine and a subsequent novel I considered to fill in the time gap (Origins turning point events 2027; LybJ 2029; the roll out of the street judges, April, 2031, Judges Avalanche, 2033).

The fun for me, was making it work--as it stood, by simply filling in gaps in creative ways to address the flaws--IOW, start with the world now and devolve it, then build it back up with the errors fixed WITHOUT changing anything existing. It was fun and a great exercise.

Regardless, it's of no matter. Three things became pretty obvious. Most fans have no interest unless it comes from the originating droids. They're good with it as it stands, gaps and impossibilities be-darned. And they have zero interest in non lifelong fans, laying their hands on it in the least. Fair enough! ;)

Never was that much into Judge Dredd, but I loved Alan Moore's "D.R. and Quinch" in the early '80s. His "Time Twisters" too, but "D R. and Quinch" was hilarious. Oh, also his "Halo Jones," which was serialized in 2000AD.

I just thought i'd bump this as i have seen a few Instagram stories detailing new Audio books set within 2000AD character, including Halo Jones.

I didn't actually realise these were a thing until very recently and am thinking of downloading a few. Any recommendations?

Also, i'm assuming that the 2000AD site is the best way to get these?

Have you thought of submitting it to Zarjaz?

Sorry to bump an old one but this is the kind of thread I was looking for when I found this place. 2000AD and Judge Dredd are my absolute favourite mags and I have been a fan for over 4 decades

Had my first issue of 2000AD back on day one in 77 I was 10 and my Dad had shown me the 2000AD advert of TV and then purchased it for me on the first day and I loved it 6 Million Dollar man knock of MACH 1, Savage with its Russian (sorry Volgan) Invasion, Flesh I mean what 10 year old didn't like dinosaurs and Dan Dare it was magnificent.

then issue 2 hit and Dredd was there and that was me hooked. My dad would take me every week on Sat morning to get the next issue but round about issue 6 unfortunately my Dad suffered a Brain Haemorrhage and passed away and I stopped going to get them.

My brother kept buying me the mag week after week and putting them aside

A few months passed and I picked them up again and reread them from the start and got up to date and by that point Dredd was in the robo wars with Call me Kenneth and that lead to regular reading of the mag to the present day

Have been a fan for 40+ years and a lot of stories have been superb some not so great but that constant of DREDD keeps me reading.

Very poigniant mag for me and lovely to see others that appreciate it for the genius that it is.

The Judge Dredd novels are quite entertaining. And , some of the crossover comics and graphic novels are fun, especially the ones where he meets Batman .:)

Yeah I read the Batman ones and in all honesty the ones that involve Star Trek, Doctor Who, Freddy Kruger, Dracula and Harry Potter etc the universe they built allows writers to do anything they want, this week is a super current satire on the current world politics or commercialism and then next week he meets the Wizard of Oz :)

And don’t apologise for reviving a thread that you think is old. The previous post was only eight months ago, and BAYLOR and myself are the kings* of thread revivalry.

I love seeing these old posts resurrected. 2000AD was a mainstay for me into my childhood and I collected them up to my 20's and only got rid of them when space became an issue. The 70's was a wonderful time to be a child. So many great stories and so much humour. I adored Judge Dredd, but there were just so many great stories. (Halo Jones, Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper and Bad Company are probably my favourites.)

It's a shame that Karl Urban's Dredd wasn't well received by our American cousins as it was a very good movie with a standout performance from both Olivia Thurlby and Lena Heady. A refreshing tonic from the current overdose of Superhero movies we're getting.

There was a Judge Dredd RPG. I never played the game, but I collected and painted the figurines. Great fun and I wished I'd kept them.

Yes, I agree. As long as there is reason behind reading and adding to an existing thread (however old) I don't see the reasoning as to why it would require a brand new one. It's also nice (and sometimes sad) to see posts from people who don't post as often (if at all) these days, and also cool to see things I wrote 5-10 years ago. Do I still agree with myself? Not always!

My only claim to writing fame so far has been having a piece being published in the Judge Dredd Megazine 372 after winning a competition - as a long time 2000AD fan I can die happy. Apartment 1027c has been recently republished in the omnibus Judge Fear's Big Day Out with Rebellion contacting me through this very forum :)

That fist few had a great mix but over the years as new stuff came from within and without (Merges with mags like Starlord) its just kept improving Strontium Dog, Robusters and later the ABC Warriors, Robo Hunter, Timequake, The VC's , Anderson, Angel, Mach Zero and more I mean it was all a kid could want, TV had peaked my interest in Fantasy but this mag made it very very solid.

The DREDD 2012 movie was a near perfect portrayal of the world that they had on paper with only 3 exceptions for me, MC1 was not as well realised as it should have been, The Lawmaster was a weak looking bike and 3 when DREDD gets shot, in the mag it tales more than 1 round to the stomach to put him down.

Still a film I watch at least once a year.

I've started reading Judge Dredd: Year One. First impressions are good and i have quite a nostalgic feeling when reading it.

I'm hoping it stays good as I'd like to buy the other novels. I have to confess that i haven't bought any 2000AD comics for 30 years and after seeing Eaglemoss go into administration, I'd like to support the brand where i can.

I thought I’d get a little more involved with the 2000AD stories. I have the app and i think I’ll start getting one or two of the collected stories each month. I think it would be great for me to get back into their stories. Looking through their catalogue I see there are plenty of strips that I haven’t seen.
I just downloaded Dredd: Underbelly. A story of some muties being smuggled in to Mega City 1 to make drugs before being disposed of. Quick, violent and bleak. Typical Judge Dredd. I was pleased to see a little of the dark humour is still present. I also liked that there were a couple of references to the Dredd movie as well.

Looking forward to getting back into 2000AD. I bought DR and Quinch (a favourite of mine in the 80s) and I’ll start my journey with the Shocking Futures set, I think.

I've downloaded a few more of the novels and am very much enjoying them.

So far, i've only read Year 1, Year 2 and year 3. Each one contains 3 short stories that fit the comic strip format well and all have been enjoyable and i'd recommend them to anyone looking to jump back into 2000AD as it's a great way to start.
