Don't you think Star Trek has had a long enough run already?

There have been 4 series, (I forget how many)movies, and a new series on the way. I think it's about time to lay ST to rest.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the show. I was a fan of "Next Generation" for years, and even tried to get into "Deep Space Nine" untill it got to the point that I just couldn't watch it anymore. I even tried to get into Voyager, but it just didn't live up. Star Trek has just gotten too big.

IMO, this show has been continuing far too long for it's own good. Everything needs an end point somewhere, that's what truely makes a story grand(the fact that you can have a set begining and end, and can see characters grow and mature and develope between the two points). With so many incarnations, the show just seems to be continuously loosing the qualities that made the entire concept of Star Trek so marvelous to begine with.

The newest series, "Enterprise", is a kind of prequil to the origional Star Trek. This, to me, means that the writers no longer have enough ideas of how to take the series and progress with it, so they're doing a "leading up to" series instead.

...I keep getting the feeling that I didn't word this as best as I wanted to, but the basic idea is there. Everything needs to end, and I think Star Trek has passed it's time.

Just think of the Star Trek universe as a backdrop, like the Napoleonic Wars are to Sharp or Horatio Hornblower, Oxford to Inspector Morse, the American Wild West is to cowboys, etc. Each series is individual, and has a set begining and end, but is able to draw upon the settings, alien races, mythology, languages and future technology that has already been established.

I think it can keep going-
There is plenty of scope, provided they can find some imaginative writers and perhaps start retiring some of the old hands who are getting stale.

Should it be rested for a few years before another entry?

Yes!

Running TNG, DS9 and Voyager was too much

Agreed. I suppose that if there were a large enough break between series, it would be better. Otherwise it's more like "Oh, another Star Trek".

treks gonna be around permanantly now in syndication, so theres no rest from it. I still enjoy watching reruns, esp of TNG, the best of all the 4 shows up to now. I'm lookign forward to "Enterprise" being different enough to attract my attention for a while.

Hot to say i am the same... no matter hows many times i have seen an episode i will watch it again if it is on Tv....

I never tire from Trek

What Rick Berman says...

I don't always agree with Rick Berman, but I think this is spot on:

"I think that Star Trek is unique in two important ways. First of all, it's been around for 35 years. It's become part of the American mythos. You'd be very hard-pressed to find somebody who doesn't know about 'Beam me up Scotty' or Warp speed or things like that. I think it's something that's comfortable to people because of its familiarity.

And I also think that in a world where there's a lot of science fiction that's apocalyptic and negative, Star Trek has always had a hopeful viewpoint of the future. And I think that as long as that exists, there's always going to be an interest in it."

Dave mentioned looking at "Star Trek" as a 'backdrop' to the stories -- good thought --

when i saw that, i thought 'law & order' --

there are 3 separate versions of this show on the air - all running concurrently - the original now in it's 12th year - and they each have the same basic premise -- the cops work the case and the DA's try to make sure the bad guys go to jail - only sometimes it doesn't always work that way -- the newest one adds the element of the actual commission of the crime, but the basic idea is still the same --

Trek is the same way -- humans/Terrans venturing out into space to explore and find new 'worlds and civilizations' -- and they do this in each of the series -- tho DS9 was less 'exploration' and more 'stationary conflict' (until they got their ship and could leave the station more freely) -- but each 'crew' is searching and exploring -- and they all run into little bumps along the way --

tho - i think it might have been nice if there hadn't always been a 'happy ending' to each episode (this is what makes L&O so interesting) -- if, say, Picard and friends goofed up a planet, but were unable to 'fix' what they had 'broken' -- tho they tried - and had to live w/ the consequences (and if this happened and i've forgotten - sorry) --

It happened with some of the political stories such as the Klingon Civil War arc, but usually everything is neatly tied up each week and they move on to a new planet.

DS9 always had to live with the consequences of what they did. I think it was the most realistic series.

I hate that 'reset button' as they call it in TOS, TNG and most of all VOY.

Also, I thought that the idea in TNG' Force of Nature' that warp Engines might be damaging space itself was excellent. All ships restricted to Warp 5. Great idea! They soon solved that after a few episodes though, really annoys me!

I have never been able to accept that the episodes were that close in reality. For a whole host of reasons. Miraculous repairs being the least of them.

With TOS and TNG it was conceivable that the damage inflicted on whichever Enterprise could be repaired quickly. If not in a dock, then at least somewhere 'safe'.

On Voyager there is/was never that excuse.

With DS9 a whole raft of things came together.
