i think the reason they had another dax is because they played up the whole dax/julian thing so much and they needed to do something with him for the series finale. they knew it was coming up and they needed something for him to do for the rest of his life that would make the audience happy.

Yeah he needed saomething happy to happen to him. And Jadzia was just a little too overpowering to make it an equal thing. I'm glad they chose Ezri.
