Fantasy author to lead the Odyssey '04 summer writing workshop for budding SFF talent.

Writer's workshop Odyssey will be hosting New York Times fantasy author George R.R. Martin as special writer-in-residence at its summer 2004 session.

Martin, author of numerous novels including the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series, has won a Bram Stoker Award, a World Fantasy Award, two Nebula Awards, four Hugo Awards, and six Locus Awards.

His short story collections include A Song for Lya and Other Stories; Sandkings; and GRRM: a rretrospective, forthcoming from Subterranean Press. Two of his short stories, "Remembering Melody" and "Sandkings," were adapted for television while his story "Nightflyers" was made into a feature film. He has also edited the anthology series New Voices in Science Fiction and Wild Cards.

Early in his career, Martin taught Journalism at Clark College in Iowa, where he also served as writer-in-residence. He then moved to Hollywood where he worked as a story editor for the Twilight Zone TV series. Martin moved on to work on the series Beauty and the Beast, where he took on the role of Co-Supervising Producer in 1989. Martin continued his career in Hollywood for a number of years. He currently lives and writes in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Other 2004 guest lecturers include authors Catherine Asaro, Ellen Kushner, Delia Sherman, and Barry B. Longyear; bestseller Bob Mayer; and editor/writer Gardner Dozois.

Tuition for Odyssey is $1,500 and housing in on-campus townhouses runs $397.50 for the six weeks. Students have the option of receiving college credit. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and graduate of the program, Odyssey will be offering three Gandalf Grant scholarships to the most promising writers of the class of 2004 in the amounts of $1,250, $500, and $250.

Odyssey is a one of the main creative writing workshop for science fiction, fantasy, and horror authors. It was founded nine years ago to provide genre writers the guidance and support necessary to become professionals. Forty percent of Odyssey's graduates have gone on to be published; while past lecturers have included authors, editors, and agents such as Harlan Ellison, Jane Yolen, Terry Brooks, Ben Bova, Ellen Datlow, Donald Maass and Dan Simmons.

The class meets for three and a half hours in the morning, five days a week, and students use the afternoons and evenings to write and critique each other's work. The six-week workshop is held on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University from June 14th-July 23rd, 2004, aiming for an intensive learning and writing experience with in-depth feedback on students' manuscripts.

Students must apply by April 15th 2004.
