    Dr. Who watch-a-long... coming soon!

For those of you who follow Galactic Journey, you know that we are a time-shifted group of writers living life 55 years ago. And if you didn't know that, now you do! :) It is our understanding that, come November 1963, a new British science fiction show called Dr. Who will be coming out. It...

    September 2018: Reading Thread

In addition to Margaret St. Clair's "Sign of the Labrys" (which is quite good so far), I'm also plowing through the usual line-up of Galaxy, F&SF, and Analog. The Galaxy contained a short novel by William Tenn and a fine short story by Cordwainer Smith.

"Galactic Journey" monthly reviews by Victoria

She really is a terrific writer. And our tastes and style are eerily similar...

Mining to start on the Moon soon

In the old game Moonbase, Helium 3 was the primary bread and butter of the space colony.

    Time Travel with Me!

Blast back to 1962! Four years before the Five Year Mission, one year before the blue Police Box, when the Fantastic Four were on issue five. Galactic Journey is a portal to the past -- a window on sci-fi and the space race, comics and culture in that fascinating Mad Men world that set the...

Congratulations, Vic! I know better than anyone what a boon you'll be for them. (You can see Vic's excellent work at the Journey here)

Best and Worst Star Trek Episodes, Original Series

That's fair. As annoying as it can be, there is gravity to it. It feels like a movie. And you get to see Shatner's kid! :)

    1.14 : The Galileo Seven.

That was the point -- Kirk wanted to dawdle to give the landing party a chance to be rescued.

Recommendations about where to start for the uninitiated

Those Telesnaps were vital in the reconstruction of many episodes. I'd love to see Marco Polo someday...

    The man who prevented WWIII

Autumn 1983 is probably the closest we ever came to war with the Soviets. It was terrifying, particularly in retrospect. Of course, I may think differently after I cover the Cuban Missile Crisis in three months...

Mining the Moon makes sense... for inhabitants of the Moon.

    Mind-Reading Characters in Fiction

John Campbell, editor of Astounding (later Analog) was inordinately fond of psychic stories. Virtually every issue from the late 1950s onward has got a story involving mind-reading. Garrett/Janifer's Sweet Little Old Lady Series features a charmingly crazy woman who is a telepath.

What did you blog about today?

Soviet Science Fiction. More specifically, More Soviet Science Fiction, a collection of Communist SF, from 1962. Worth checking out for a peek at SF behind the Iron Curtain...

Dividing up a country SF style (?)

One doesn't have to go into SF to find real-life examples. Anarcho-Communism of the late teens in Russia? Israeli Kibbutzim of the 1950s? For science fiction, you might try the post-apocalyptic variety (for instance, Alas, Babylon).

    Where to start?

Absolutely The Original. Not only is it arguably the best, but it is the progenitor.

How do you solve a problem like Star Trek.... Where are we going with Trek

I greatly appreciate the recommendations! Looks like a lot has happened since I retreated to the past... As for Firefly, I was okay with the anachronistic touch -- it was stylistic affectation, a sort of short-hand for "this is a different culture, but one that's approachable." I did find...

    Alpha Centauri - help needed!

That's true, but for something to be science fiction, it should conform at least to known facts! :)

    Favorite TOS parody

That's fair. I am looking forward to getting to SNL in 13 years. Actually, I'm looking forward to lots of things.. but if there's anything I've learned since starting the Journey, it's that there's always interesting stuff in any era. :)
