    RIP Carrie Fisher

Apparently Carrie Fisher's mother died today. I guess the shock of it all was too much for her. And the grief.

    Perceptions of violence in SFF

When I'm pondering the subject of violence in books that I'm reading or things that I'm writing I usually ask these questions: 1. If the character is using violence in reaction to a situation, is violence an appropriate/proportional reaction to the situation at hand? 2. Does the type of...

Good Science and Bad Science And Lack Thereof In Science Fiction Films and TV Series

Lucy. That 2014 movie killed my brain with its' stupidity and scientific myths about the brain. Morgan Freeman was that movie's only saving grace!

Redemptive Themes: Religious Imagery in Tolkien

I apologize if there exists a similar thread, but this is a topic that interests me. I wrote a twelve page paper on the redemptive themes of LotR and the Hobbit, specifically focusing on the characters of Frodo and Galadriel. What is some of the most powerful religious imagery that you have...

The Hobbit should have been 1 or 2 films?

Two was the sweet spot. One would've compressed it, three meant that they had to add a bunch of extra material.

    Women knights?

Female warriors are an interesting topic. Since they are permitted to function openly as warriors, I'd imagine that in a society like that it would not take long for that sort of equality to stretch through all layers of society. I think the women would make the best archers or spies though.

    19th Century Punishment

What is in interesting is that by the 18th century, britain was one of the only armies that regularly flogged. I know more about 18th century punishment than 19th century punishment though. I will see if I come across some interesting information. Here's an interesting bit of information that...

What would be Firefly's Season 2 story arc?

I think I would have liked to explore the idea of raising a family onboard ship and the implications that it would have for any of the kids growing up in a confined environment like that.

    December: What are you reading?

History books and theology books that friends have lent to me! A friend of mine lent me a very interesting title called "The Crucified Rabbi" which is very intriguing. I'm a messianic jew and she's a catholic. We've often had theological/philosophical discussions on our difference in belief. I...

How to fight with a halberd

Haven't had a chance to watch the video in full yet but I will add that while I've never fought with a halberd, I've had to salute with a ceremonial halberd on some occasions. As a military interpreter I played a sergeant several times while out on parade and sergeants through the 18th century...
