I think the way Troo's done it is fine, and there's no doubt that this is a book about Fred Bartlett rather than by him. But, perhaps, just to be sure... maybe if he had a bit of a sexier - or at least more memorable - name, if he's going to become a "brand" character in a series of books?

Troo's design looks like the sort of book you would see sitting on a bookshelf. I think you should go with that, meself. I take your point about Fred Bartlett, though - you don't want to pick up readers who think they're getting the latest adventures of a genial Bassett Hound who usually makes...

Demons don't have to be literal. Perhaps the psychic detective has to face down his own internal demons as well as the big fire-breathing chappie from Hell. Only when he conquers his fear of red Smarties will he be able to save the world, that sort of thing.

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

What star sign are you, John (well, this is personal questions)? It's just that the always accurate Claire Petulengro says in my horoscope today that "Geminis can solve a money dilemma", and I was just wondering...

The perfect chapter is as exactly as long as it takes to read while sitting on the toilet.

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I seriously wouldn't worry about that if I were you, unless you've got a specific interest in typesetting and printing. If you're a writer, your job is to write.

A question for those who are self-published

GP Taylor's SHADOWMANCER is one of the few. And, as John says, got a lot of press for the fact that it did so, indicating how unusual it is.

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Do you think there's room in the market for an, um, brain surgeon-turned-sorceror supreme? He'd be called, ah, Senior House Officer Weird. Or something. And he'd have a girlfriend with white hair who wore tights around the house all the time. She'd be called Leah. And a faithful oriental...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

From the self-publishing thread: Hmm. I really hope it wasn't the £300 grand advance that inspired you to start writing, because the odds are you (and me, and all of us on this board) are going to be sorely disappointed.

    Novel Word Count

I generally busk the length of novels, but work out a rough guide by thinking, okay, my average chapter length is, say, 3,000 words so that would be 40 chapters needed to get a book to 120K, and rough-plot it accordingly.

    Premature Submissions

My missus doesn't get to read anything until it's published. Novels are between me and my agent. Shorts I sometimes punt out to a closed internet reading group before submission, sometimes not.
