    Scalzi's New Deal...

Good things for the genre, seriously? Oh well, fanboys will think their preferred writers are the greatest thing to happen to the genre after Asimov or Clarke, so that is a moot point. I dislike Scalzi and his writing for a number of reasons. However I also think that he is far from the biggest...

Please, you just need one or two determined fanboys with some scripting knowledge, goodreads doesn't even use a cpatcha. Any script kiddie could easily write you a bot that can make a few thousand accounts and vote for particular books.

We know who they buy most of their components from, getting a price quote from Samsung is probably not that hard. Since Apple and Samsung are also rivals I doubt they get much of a sweetheart deal. As to corporate acquisitions, we can get that information as well, from the reports to the...

ERM, Ray, are you familiar with SEC filings and annual reports to investors, or the plethora of sites offering stats about a company's book value and number of shares outstanding.;)

Well Sanderson is massively popular, especially after he finished WoT. And fantasy does outperform science fiction in sales and popularity massively. Although I doubt that he is as popular as Tolkien, GRRM and the other top Fantasy writers.

Perhaps we can form a committee and get you one, next year we will give it to Hex, or Ray, we should call ourselves the snobbish Koalas.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

Thanks again, why are publishers and writers so stingy with the sales and compensation data, are they perhaps afraid of the rank and file going up in arms because of the compensation of the more lucrative writers, or are they just fearful of discouraging new writers from coming into the field?

    Scalzi's New Deal...

Maybe, a comprehensive list would be excellent, along with sales figures and advances per book is something I have wanted from the start.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

The Hugos are a joke, as the Sad Puppies and the invasion voting of Potter fans showed that award is too easy to game with someone with even a small following and some internet clout. The goodreads choice awards similarly are not that hard to game if your fan base is determined enough, and the...

Again Brian, with respect, sells well in comparison to who? That has been my question from the start, if someone can actually answer that question I will be more than glad to shut up.

Will you buy a paperback as a gift or as a keepsake for yourself? I certainly would not, as I said, and as the survey I linked to shows, paperbacks are going the way of the dodo. They are good impulse buys, but with physical bookstores closing in favor of internet ones their days are numbered.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

If the Amazon numbers I posted are anything to go by I'd wager that the e-book sales for genre fiction are better than the paperback or hardcover sales. Truth be told, I think that the paperback is dying, hardcover books have more gravitas, they are as much an item of some sentimental value as...

    Scalzi's New Deal...

With all due respect, the UK is just one third of the size of the US market, and then there is the fact that Scalzi is internationally known. Again, these sales are impressive in relation to what, how many books does Baxter sell? How many books did Pratchett sell when he was still with us...

    Scalzi's New Deal...

One, the figure was for 8 months, not 7, two, 8 months is more like 70% of a year. Three, I dothink the sales data from the redshirts blogpost mentioned paperback sales. Four, who actually reads paperbacks these days, most of the "low end" sales are digital. Five, I doubt that books sell that...

    Scalzi's New Deal...

Oh, I see. Without any real specifics we really can't say anything for sure. However I still wonder if 262 thousand per book is justified when you consider that the writer's last prominent book sold 80 thousand in about a year.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

Oh, are you nd chopper per chance established science fiction writers with a dozen books behind you? I certainly know I am not one.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

Indeed, I really do not think that I denied that 80 000 books sold in about a year is bad achievement for a novice, can you point me to the post where you saw such a claim? However we are talking about the "big fish" here, namely established writers that receive large advances and lucrative...

    Scalzi's New Deal...

I do not either, but if 50 000 copies a week is what you have to move just to get on the NY Times Bestseller list then those numbers sound quite modest by comparison. Please keep in mind that the 50 thousand figure is something I read long ago, it might be a case of wrong information or bad memory.

    Scalzi's New Deal...

How does that work in perspective,I thought that you would need to sell at least 50 000 copies in a week to get in any US best-seller list for example?
