What are you working on right now?

While I develop a series of short stories/novellas based on my Draconia books, I'm reading through the first book, which was also my first published novel, trying to get back in touch with characters. I'm cringing a lot. My appreciation for those who left high reviews on Goodreads, those...

Mixing surprise and planning while writing a story

When I start planning a new novel, I plan in broad strokes, brainstorming and listing the plot points that I want to hit at some point in the story. Then, I do a chapter-by-chapter outline where I list the key scenes/sequences. I work on this as I go, partly to keep up with the changes in...

What are you working on right now?

With Final Frontier done and currently with beta readers, I've started working on a series of short stories/novellas that will form two anthologies. Ten stories related to my Draconia books. Five stories have already been written but are in need of editing if not extensive re-writing. The other...

    Beta Reader Marketplace

Requesting readers for a soft science fiction (Star Trek-level) novel primarily for a full read (113k words). I have several British characters (including the main character), so it would be great if I could get someone based in the UK. I also have a couple of passages for which I would like an...

    The chronicles word counter!

Update: Novel: Final Frontier Genre: Science Fiction Word Count: 114,773 (OpenOffice), 113,309 (Word) Status: Just finished a round of editing. I was having problems with OpenOffice, so I switched to Word. The two processors seem to count words differently.

Never Made Movies that You Wish Had Been Made

Film adaptation of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. There have been multiple announcements in the last 15 years of a studio picking up the rights and a screenwriter being assigned the project, but nothing further. Barry Sonnenfeld's Dinosaurs vs. Aliens. Star Trek 4 --I was intrigued by...

What was the last movie you saw?

I recently got around to watching Storks on Netflix. I thought it looked stupid when it first came out and so decided to skip it. The whole idea of storks delivering babies never made sense to me, even as a child. Now that I've seen it... I still think it's stupid, but not as much. It's...

    POV character's internal thoughts

I've been doing the second option but without the italics, stemming from my last three books where I had a race of telepathic dragons, which included many of my POV characters. All of their dialogue was italicized. It would have been confusing had I also italicized their internal thoughts.

    Monologues in films (movies)

In my opinion, Charlie Chaplin's speech at the end of The Great Dictator is still the best in the history of cinema. Followed by President Whitmore's speech in Independence Day.

Why do they say "Kill your darlings"

A mystery or a discovery being made could also work as a hook.

Why do they say "Kill your darlings"

I believe the expression actually refers to an element of the story (a scene, a plotpoint, a line, an exchange of dialogue) that you have a particularly strong attachment to. If it's hurting the story in any way, you need to be ready to cut it out. That's my take on it, anyway, but I'm pretty...
