    Writing retreats

I find that having a space for people who don’t want critique is good (me!) and having clear crit rules will stop people from butting in.

    Agent Submission Questions

My last two agents got back to me within days. The partial and full requests never took more than a couple of weeks - maybe max 8 weeks? I queried a lot of people.

    Writing retreats

I organise one once a year for my writers group. Next year’s retreat is a 5 day cruise to Kangaroo Island in South Australia - my best ever. And my biggest! We just do sustained writing spurts either in a chatty group or alone in another part of the house/mansion/ship. We come together during...

    British Fantasy Society Competition

Whoops, I was talking about this: British Fantasy Award - Wikipedia Its the award for an already published story, not a competition entry. (FWIW the 2012 short story winner was Angela Slatter, whose work is terrific and well worth checking out).

How many POV characters should my book have?

Agreed Brian. There's a difference between knowing implicitly that your story will need to be told by multiple characters, and being not quite certain enough that multiple POV is the right thing to do that a writer has to seek other opinions: ie, this forum post asking "how many is too many". A...

    British Fantasy Society Competition

A writer who is a friend of a friend won this back in 2012. Her career really took off afterwards, but her stuff is fantastic...

Writing contest - 48 Hour Flash Fiction 2017

Well, that's SECOND place then. :notworthy: It was interesting to see how a deadline and a no-excuses topic FORCES one to actually write and finish something. The number of 2-page specials on my hard-drive right now is an epic tragedy (rolls eyes)

How many POV characters should my book have?

For anyone new to writing, or on a first novel, my advice would be to stick with one character. By the time GRRM wrote GOT, he was an accomplished TV and novel writer. POV was a walk in the park by then!

Writing contest - 48 Hour Flash Fiction 2017

Not yet, I didn't even know until a friend tweeted me yesterday... Anyway, Thursday's the day...

Writing contest - 48 Hour Flash Fiction 2017

I MADE THE SHORTLIST :alien: Also I probably lurk to much and don't post enough to be absolutely Chrons :-( I should have said something when the thread started up but it would be jinxy. Anyway, it was fun. I live in Australia and the tickets are non-transferable unfortunately. (I checked)

Where is the new age of Science Fiction Literature?

UMMMMM with all respect are you even aware of what is even going on in the Science Fiction world??? The whole point of the Sad/Rabid Puppies Hugo mess and the fact that nobody even won an award last year was precisely BECAUSE nobody writes those things you quoted! Or at least nobody is...

    Jennifer Wells on self-publishing

There are many ways for using Twitter. If you're clever you will only sign up to follow friends and people you know, and ignore bot sign-ups or (gasp) writers.

    Know any sf agents?

Also for your query to the prospective agent, when you put in your "comparable" writers to yourself and your project, remember to list people who have been **published** in the last 12 months. Not someone dead! Wolfe and Ballard and Dick are excellent writers, but you need to allude to someone...

    Acorns - help with description

I shall sweep in with some hard-won advice (Juliana is on the money!) "X held the acorn pendant so tightly it dug into her hand." This is all you will need. The description and orientation of the acorn parts, the shape of the weal, all of these are irrelevant UNLESS: *At some part of the...

Is the "Dystopian" genre for YA dead?

Cycles go around and around. At the moment it's Epic Fantasy and Contemporary YA. New Adult is another genre starting to heat up.

    Starting with a Trilogy

I just had a fantasy trilogy accepted by an agent. So I guess it's within the realms of possibility. (We go on subs next month. Then I can say for sure if one can debut with a trilogy)

    War, two sides

Think the Iran/Iraq conflict: Like A is Iraq, B is Iran, C is America, meddling in the background

Writing a query to an agent.

I have a full out through a slush pile query. Springs is on point!

    Great news!!!

I was just about to post the link to the AW forum too! Having people to bite your fingernails with is an excellent thing, I would totally recommend asking for an invite. (I had a few net-friends and other folks I knew on a recent agency open sub, but now all the forums have dried up and I am...

    How do characters interact?

You could try "Story" by Robert McKee. Its geared towards screenplays, but there's some good ideas about characters and conflict.
