Who is the heir of Winterfell?

I would say that many of the things that you say GRRM has shown, are in fact little more than in-universe stories/justifications told to each other that haven't actually held up when we look at the events in the books. The North is fundamentally different from the South! Except they all act...

    Noun plurals and apostrophes

Another random point: sports teams tend to work in a similar way. That is, we say "The Giants offense" or "the Giants linebackers", rather than using the possessive. At least, that's what the AP stylebook says. But Emperors Guard still looks wrong, so I'm with Hex.

    Should characters die?

Death in the climax isn't shocking anymore, but I don't think it ever was. It's always been an acceptable way to end a storyline -- heroic sacrifice and all that. But having the hero survive and be a mopy, tortured soul for a book or two isn't all that much fun, in my experience. The reason...

Who is the heir of Winterfell?

Did you really internalize the nonsensical moral code of rule that GRRM is kind of trying to deconstruct throughout his books? I mean, if there's one thing I'd take away from the books it's that might tends to make right in practice, and that all of those associations were established through...

A fragment - can anything be done with it?

I concur with most here: I'd use it as a prologue, or a prologue blurb. You know, one of those all-italics things you sometimes see at the start of a book (or a chapter), then followed by actual narrative. A stage-setting, and an implication of a wider religious account.

    1383 words

Overall, I liked it. I thought it was a very effective use of voice to create the naive, self-important, arrogant character of Galadon and show how he is being manipulated, without really showing it. One thing I did keep coming back to was a lot of telling over showing, as everyone has noted...

The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

I thought those outlines were mostly to finish it in case GRRM passes away? Though, I guess that doesn't preclude their use in other cases. We'll have second half of ASoS done in the show next year, right? Then there are effectively three more books (in word count volume) to go through with...

Who is the heir of Winterfell?

For all practical purposes, who is the "rightful" heir really doesn't matter very much. It's whether whomever is laying claim to the throne can somehow justify it, however weakly, and then rally enough support behind him to make that claim count. Which is why you have Ramsay Bolton/Snow marrying...

    Which one is right?

"His parents watched the screen reverently/in awe" does seem a bit more natural.

    Too much description is bad?

I'm not sure that's true, honestly. I might google what something looks like occasionally, but usually that tells me the author did a poor job of describing what was happening.

Well, unless you're looking for a unique fishing method.

    Which one is right?

    2) feels better than 1) though I don't know if that makes 2) wrong, per se. Awe is probably better, as others have noted. As for finger-knived sandman: first thing to pop into my head is Edward Scissorhands just because it's fingers and knives, but it does force me to stop and think what it means.

Part of Chapter 2 - the tourmaline dragon

Thanks for posting it! Victoria and Springs did a good job going through this one by one, so I'll just give you a few general reactions I had while reading this rather than going through it step by step. Mostly, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at all of the information and worldbuilding...

opinion on a simile. does it work?

That latest version does sound forced. That would work without the "as though it were a pond in the rain". Maybe something like "as though they were raindrops disturbing a pond"?

    Brandon Sanderson creative writing lectures

He's a devout Mormon. I don't know if he's conservative in other issues, but in issues that religion touches on he almost has to be. But his views are fairly nuanced, really: Brandon Sanderson: EUOLogy: Dumbledore's Homosexuality

    Flash fiction opening (341)

Since you asked for harsh, I'm going to be slightly harsh. Not that I'm very good at being not-harsh. Don't take it personally, it's all meant to help you. You only get to the source of real tension at the very end: if he arrives where he's going without clothes, he's going to be killed...

    Women authors in SF& F

This sort of thing has a tendency to be somewhat subconscious, not a conscious decision. Most men who read fantasy probably don't identify as hating women and would generally support women's rights. But they're used to seeing their fantasy written by men, so when they see a book written by a...

    Who does Varys work for?

We only have some vague hints, but no concrete answers. We know that before they died out, newer generations tended to be smaller and smaller and live shorter and shorter lives. There was a hint that that may have happened because the later generations of Targaryens kept them chained up inside...

    Is peace just a fantasy?

I guess that's true because of the 'non-specialised' qualifier, but in my studies I've always found the stuff that isn't war (and particularly socio-economic developments) a lot more interesting. A lot of that stuff is fascinating, and I always try to build that into my writing, too. On the...
