    Book of the New Sun

Interesting to read this thread. It's been so long since I read these books that I don't feel I can comment now on their readability. I loved the New Sun books when I read them and followed up with the Long Sun books, the first two Soldier books. Having grown up reading the Greek myths I think I...

    5.05: The Web of Fear

my brother had the film reels for this at his house! i think he did some initial work on them to protect the film.

    Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

thanks, nice blog you have there. good review and i agree 1Q84 is an overlong book, which would be less of a problem if it was sufficiently enthralling all the way through. i'm never going to remember it in a way that, say, a weighty tome like Dhalgren will remain with me. you ought to try...

    Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

Well, I didn't mind IQ84 though, yeah, you wouldn't call it orthodox, but then why are we here. The windup bird chronicle is my favourite of his. Just outstanding and one I'd recommend.

    Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

I liked Cloud Atlas but much preferred his earlier book Ghostwritten which also featured 'connecting' stories. I don't quite recall but I think the connections may have been more coherent in it. I think he's a big fan of Murakami

Science Fiction & The Music Of Tomorrow

Under old earth - cordwainer smith in which music or a type of music is key to the story. not sure if it's so much about future based music or more the author's comment on the music of the era in which he wrote the book. great story anyway.

    Elysium (2013)

saw this film last week. like others i thought the plot was a bit of a mess though i guess it's difficult to build complexity into a 2 hr film and still deliver what hollywood expects

Prometheus (2012) - your opinions *No spoilers*

Prometheus concept was fine for me. I agree with what others have said. too much going on and to fit in to the story so it ends up with shallow characters and their odd decisions. but I've seen it twice and enjoyed it both times.

What is your favorite book? (Robert A Heinlein)

The door into summer is my favourite of his. I liked The moon is a harsh mistress but didn't really like Stranger. Not sure I've read any others.

    Your SF/F Reading Habits

i voted almost exclusively sci-fi but realise that's a bit of a mistake as i've read the GoT books, and relatively recently KJ Parker's Engineer series and Rothfuss' Name of the wind. to be honest the latter two, whilst generally well written, have put me off fantasy a bit.

Question about Cheradenine Zakalwe (Spoilers! Read Use of Weapons First!)

this is my favourite banks book. it's interesting reading people's thoughts on it. whilst it's a while since I read it I never had the feeling it didn't fit together. I also didn't consider any split personality aspect. more that he uses the name as a reminder and in some sense a weapon against...

    John Brunner

I read Stand on Zanzibar a couple of years ago (although I'm wondering now if I did finish it fully!) It is very relevant in today's terms and was more interesting to me as a result of this.

    What shall I read next?

King Rat is a decent read but not of the standard of Perdido and the Scar. So if you're just going to read one of his, I'd make it one of those.
