October: What Have You Been Reading?

I stopped reading The Wind-up Girl by Paulo Bacigalupi as I found the writing style not to my liking. Overly-descriptive sex scenes (or any overly descriptive scene, I have an imagination thanks), aren't my thing.

Fantasy vs Science Fiction: A Poll

I like both, but currently read more Sci-Fi. It's very close! 135-137 as I write.

Plotline for a war between 5 philosophies

I used to love MTG. Salt by Adam Roberts has tension and conflict between factions of differing philosophies on a newly colonised planet. It's not epic, as it appears yours intends to be, it focuses on the stories of a couple of characters from differing factions and their experiences and...

    You smell!

Alice Cooper. When I was a kid, girls smelled of unattainability. And scorn.

    most mind blowing/mind bending books?

I will third Martian Time-Slip. I would also add VALIS and The Divine Invasion as mind-blowing PKD works. I second Man Plus. Theodore Sturgeon's More Than Human about gifted children hiding away is excellent. The Age of Wire and String by Ben Marcus is completely "out there". I recommend...

It's December. What are you reading?

@Hex He's 13, so I'm hoping to kindle the love of some sort of art form before he becomes an adult and loses his sense of wonder. The comic is like that all the way through, I haven't the foggiest what's going on except there are some baddies, some goodies and the cops, who think the goodies...

It's December. What are you reading?

@Hex I know the feeling. I bought it for my nephew who doesn't like to read - in the hope that it will ignite a passion for reading - and thought I'd give it a read. It feels like my eyes are bleeding....

It's December. What are you reading?

Its sequel, Lavondyss, is even better. This month I am reading Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds. Also I am reading Justice League (the graphic novel) and it is a confusing welter of images that I may need to be a teenage boy to understand......

DISCUSSION -- December 2014 75 Word Writing Challenge

Cheers for the swear responses. The story doesn't work IMO without the swearing. I'll send it to a couple of mods to see what they think.

Take the BBC Science Fiction Quiz

7/15. Which if it were a proper sci fi quiz I would be disappointed in, but "who directed movie X" doesn't really count as a sci-fi question. As a general knowledge quiz, 7/15 is still pretty bad however. I am obviously a dunce.

    Recommendation for my nephew...

Cheers for the Dredd recommendations, I loved the Dredd Megazine when I was a kid. @Abernovo; we may be talking a different rugby, as he lives in the rugby league stronghold of St Helens.....

    Recommendation for my nephew...

Cheers Donal, the investigations into suitable reading material are still ongoing, so I will check out your recommendations.

    Recommendation for my nephew...

Hi CC, his friends consider Rugby and Soccer and Call of Duty 'cool'. It makes me sad. However thank you for the age-appropriate manga recommendations, I will check them out (there is so much manga out there it's mind-boggling, so I needed somewhere to start, thank you!)

    Recommendation for my nephew...

Many thanks everyone. I will try an X-men film and a Dredd comic. I will be able to read the Dredd comic before I wrap it up for him. Bonus!

I still haven't seen Radio Free Albemuth

    Recommendation for my nephew...

There's the rub, he likes The Inbetweeners and anything with Adam Sandler in it. When I mentioned going to see Guardians of the Galaxy he gave me a "what on Earth is that?" look. I want to encourage his reading, and I feel comic books are the way to initially engage him, but I am at a loss...
