Worst fantasy book you have read?

I'm just now remembered The Ringworld Throne by Larry Niven was pretty terrible. It felt like he just turned his world over to another author and said have at it. It had nothing that I loved from the original.

Do publishers/agents require new works to be a series?

Oh, that'd be terrible to spend all of that time (and give so much love) writing sequels and they never see the light of day. :) That's another reason I would rather not feel pressured to have sequels from the original work right now.

    Recommendations for Renowned Fantasy Novels

I'm actually doing something similar as the OP. I'd recommend Lackey's Black Gryphon, but stay far far away from any Dragonlance novels. Maybe the latter isn't renowned, but they certainly are popular and mainstream.

Do publishers/agents require new works to be a series?

I've read twelve fantasy and science fiction novels this year, and browsed many many more. I can't name one that wasn't part of a series (or going to be.) Are there no stand alone novels in the genre any longer? I ask because when I began working on my novel last year, I had a clear story in...

Worst fantasy book you have read?

I liked him and Kitiara, and I WOULD have liked the dragons had we been able to learn about them. That was part of my frustration with the book. I tried not to take it all too seriously, but even then it was tough to get through. I only slogged to the end to accurately be able to talk about it...

How to market your book online

    Interesting. Best of luck there.

Worst fantasy book you have read?

I've only read the second in the series, and it was painful. I agree with you on the names too. The whole book felt like I was reading some reclusive high schoolers' RP session. The dialogue was on par with mediocre fanfiction and most of the characters couldn't hold my interest. So many cliches...

How to market your book online

So am I reading correctly that even if you're published, the marketing is still on the author? I've always seen these displays for new books in stores and always thought the publisher was behind that.

    Need a scientist?

I have two ocean related questions. Assuming you're on a planet based on earth (same rotation, size, etc.) will you get waves on both sides of a channel? I have an area of my world with two parallel islands about a mile apart. There's a channel running north and south between them. Also, can...

    Inspiring music.

As a musician and composer you'd think I'd have a resounding yes, but for me music is more a distraction than help while working. I hear too much when something is playing and I can't focus. Now I do believe music can help bring out emotions for a given moment, but when it's time to write, I...

    Gender dimorphism and Acceptable limits

That's about how I'd do it. Also, thanks for the unintended recommendation. As for the minotaurs, if the females have human style mammaries, an additional udder makes no sense. It's overkill.

    How do you get inspired?

I have friends who are kind enough to let me bounce ideas off of them all day. Just being able to talk about my world and characters can help, so even if I'm not writing, I'm still using things in a sense. A fellow writer once had me do a pretend interview with some of his characters, and that...

    Gender dimorphism and Acceptable limits

My feeling with humanoid reptiles is to keep them reptilian, unless there's a really good reason not to. Were they once humans that have been changed into this form somehow? A curse? An act of God? Or did they descend from a true reptilian ancestor? I don't think they'd suddenly grow parts from...

Characters - are they real or am I insane?

My characters have been telling me what to do for as long as I've been writing, which is over a decade. For a recent example, I just learned one might be going down a darker path and it was never intended at all. He might even end up an antagonist before it's all over. Now I'm excited to see if...

Getting STUCK and Strategies to Cope

It does depend on why you're stuck. I hit a wall months ago when I couldn't decide how to proceed. I had ideas, but it was a matter of picking the best idea. Each option had different long consequences. Eventually I just had to go for it. The worst that could happen is having to try the other...

    chapter + Novel Lengths

It's a personal thing, but I hate long chapters. Long as in 30+ pages. It's comforting to have a place to stop. Chapters around 10-20 pages feel better. I tend to finish books like that much faster too, even if it's the same amount of pages/words. In my own writing, chapters are usually just...

    burning a bell tower

Mmhm, up the sides and even through weaker parts of the wood. These are quick growing, highly destructive plants. Thanks for the replies.

A plea on behalf of the semicolon.

I use them! I think they're great, though perhaps I overuse them. I try to avoid more than one every two or three pages.

    burning a bell tower

I ran into another fire related problem in my novel. My dragons don't know how to control their own weapon yet. A fire broke out at the top of a long abandoned bell tower. It's about four or five stories tall and mostly made of wood, this includes a wooden staircase inside. The exterior is...
