    First draft woes...

Quellist, I agree. I don't want to know how many nosehairs someone has, but does he have light/dark/long/curly hair? Is she short or tall? I don't care what brand her purse is, but I do care to know if it's big enough to carry a few bricks in if she needs to use it as a weapon. My characters...

    First draft woes...

I just read my first draft of the ...thing... I produced at Camp NaNo in July. It was, to my great surprise, mostly coherent and far better than I had feared. Well, if you don't count that I'm still not sure I should keep about one third of it and if I do, it needs lots of changes. One of the...

    NaNoWriMo 2014

Urgh. So my husband is the bestest guy ever. Seriously. Except when he's at home. He's actually extremely supportive, and he tries very hard not to distract me when I'm writing. But he's THERE. Sitting. Gaming. Breathing. I didn't get anything written during the weekend. Then, on Monday, I...

    NaNoWriMo 2014

24k now, so not too much behind schedule. I'm seriously doubting I'll make 90k, and even seriouslier (yes, I made that up because I'm tired) doubting that the story I'm writing has that many words in it. It's ok, though, because it's quite depressing, so I suppose the sooner it ends, the better. :P

    NaNoWriMo 2014

13k here. I'm aiming for 90k and I'll be away for about 5 days at the end of the month, so I'm writing as much as possible now at the beginning.

    NaNoWriMo 2014

I made a plot outline. I never make plot outlines. I start with an idea and a few characters and then agonize over not knowing where the story is going. I'm so eager to start writing tomorrow and see if I can stick to the plot! :D

    NaNoWriMo 2014

It was, yes. They've changed the "rules" to be 50k brand new words now, though, so you're in the clear even if you want to follow the rules. :p

Same old problem rearing its head

83 words. It was a thing of beauty. It was perfect. I loved it, gave it my heart and soul. It made me laugh, at first, when I looked at it -or at least chuckle softly to myself- before I faced reality (after I counted all those 83 lovely words) and forced myself to make the dreaded changes...

    Anyone use this?

I've used it a few times. Not on Kamikaze mode, mind you, just on the mode that gives me a gentle reminder to keep writing when I stop. I prefer http://writtenkitten.net/ if I need help to keep me going. It gives you a kitten pic for every insert-word-amount-here. I have it set to 100 words...

    NaNoWriMo 2014

TEIN, you really don't like NaNoWriMo, do you? :p I don't think it works for everyone. It does work for me, though, on many different levels. First, as you mention, the discipline. I doubt I would have finished even a short story by now if I hadn't decided to try NaNo. And I didn't "win" it the...

    Writing speed questions

Wait, what? Are we supposed to actually finish our stories? ... Ok. I have two first drafts for novels and a few drafts for short stories and some pieces of flash fiction I consider more or less done. And numerous abandoned or set-side-for-now side projects. It wasn't until a few years ago...

    Self-publishing in serialised form

For me this is just a big no. I've taken a bit of a hiatus from Fantasy and read a lot of self-pubbed romance lately. This trend of serialising novels is annoying, not only to me but to a lot of people who actually writes reviews on Amazon. If I want to read your book, I want it all and I want...

Your favourite character to write - and why?

I have two. Lucas Greyfort, first and foremost, from Whom the Gods Love. He's described by my MC as "the shadow behind the spider's web" and sooo delicious in his sinister plotting ways. Lucas was always a joy to write. Every scene he was in practically wrote themselves. I wish the MC Valmarian...

    NaNoWriMo 2014

I'm in. I have a few ideas brewing in my head, too, so yay for that. I also have a 4-day trip planned at the end of the month, so I hope to have at least 50k words down before the 24th. Honestly, though, I don't much feel like it this time. But if I don't try, I know I'll regret it. Also...

    Flash Fiction (400 words)

Hey guys, I'm posting this more for your enjoyment (at least I hope you'll enjoy it) than for a complete crit, although of course if I've messed something up completely I'd love to know. I wrote it for a little challenge I have going with a couple of friends. 400 words and two prompt words...

    Names and Questions

Kova. Definitely Kova. "Kova" in Finnish means hard. I like all your names, though, so I understand if you're having difficulty choosing.

    Breaking rules

Exactly, Tinkerdan... I go by ear. Ear and instinct. But then, English is not my first language. It's my third. I learned my English by watching kid's shows without subtitles years before I started studying it in school. By then, I heard what was right or wrong (most of the time at least) and...

    Improving Your Prose

I started writing a reply to this yesterday, but then I felt I didn't have much to add when so many experienced people had already replied. But, as you can see, I changed my mind. Montero already gave the advice to put the story aside for a time and then read it with new eyes. I can only...
