    Jemima Catlin's Hobbit edition 2013

@Extollager Thank you for sharing. @M. Robert Gibson Thank you for providing a link to the art. The facts that I am no longer a child and that Catlin does not picture the characters as I do leads me to disliking this. The one drawing I liked was Gandalf and Bilbo at his front door. The other...

The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

Martin posted again today... unfortunately the above comments (the last comments) on TWOW were from July. It was difficult, this year like every year, to not post on April 1 that he's finished.

Tolkien: Stories are always about one thing

I tend to agree with Professor Tolkien. Isn't the thought of death a search for the bottom line? Isn't the vision, the acceptance, the reluctance, or even a brush with death set our minds upon the meaning of life? I am not a writer, just a reader. But death as a topic or theme gets my...

Ginny - Love, Hate or On-The-Fence?

@Artoriarius Yup. It's fiction. Miss Rowling did a great job, but she (like all authors) made it up as she went along.

Ginny - Love, Hate or On-The-Fence?

So there's a theory online... that can't be true. It ruins the story... but it actually may make more sense than the actual story. The theory is that Ginny used love potions on Harry. Harry grows through the series and first becomes aware of girls in the fourth book. He is attracted to Cho...

    The Wheel of Time

@Wayne Mack Interested to know if you finished it. I did read it (in my early forties) around 2006 or 2007..... with a chip on my shoulder for various reasons. I would have enjoyed it if I'd read it in the early 1990's and probably would have read at least three books.

Destiny of the Stark kids! (spoilers imminent)

Did not participate in this discussion before.... Bran is in position to wield power... either save the world or condemn it. As sweet of a boy as he was, he's falling into the same path as Joffrey, Dany, Jon, and every other child/teen in GRRM's mind. Given great power, Bran lacks real...

Theories and ideas that I think are real....

Over the years some thoughts have consolidated in my head. These expand the story or confirm hunches about the Wizarding world. I thought about searching the forum to insert each of these in the associated threads, but I'm just going to place them all here. Most of these are from online...

    The White Council

@Pyan If I remember correctly, the White Council was the inclusion of the Istari into the leaders of the Elves. But the remnants of the Noldor, Sindar, and Nandor must have met during the Second Age. Was there a name for this group? An original White Council led by Gil-galad with Galadriel...

Tyrion's Third - Littlefinger and subtlety.

Thinking today... (dangerous, I know).... about Baelish and Sansa. Do you remember Middlefinger's lessons on becoming a player of the Game of Thrones? He told Sansa how unimaginative Joffrey is. After showing the jousting Dwarves to Joffrey, Middlefinger had to actually state how much...

What if Edward the VIII Had been allowed to Marry Wallis Simpson And Remain King

As an American born in 1966, I don't know that I have any qualifications for this topic... but I'll put in my two cents anyway. It comes down to how much influence Edward VIII would have had upon the running of the government and if he'd had any issue, right? Any? Lots? Wallis Simpson was...

The failure of my Grand Unified Theory

@paranoid marvin I watched through the sixth season with some friends. I regret watching the sixth and even the fifth seasons. I have no idea how the show ends and I don't want to know. Part of me wishes that I could speak knowledgably about it with you. I'm not rebuking you for mentioning...

The failure of my Grand Unified Theory

As I continue to think about this story.... I compare it to my favorite other stories of fantasy/sci-fi. C.S. Lewis, Edgar Rice Burroughs, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Robert E. Howard are the authors whose works fired my imagination in my teens. The works of Lewis and Tolkien made sense in theology to...

    Boromir

@The Big Peat And... Dwarves. They might be greedy, avaricious, and evil, but they don't succumb easily to the domination of others.

    Boromir

I cannot disagree with that. With the lessons of time, Aragorn had prepared himself to do what Isildur could not.

    Boromir

I think we have to look at how much people entertain the thoughts of temptation in their own minds before the occasion to act upon the temtation comes upon them. Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Galadriel, Denethor, Faramir, Sam, Gorbag, and Shagrat are all tempted by the Ring...

    Boromir

Recently, I was watching a millenial reaction to The Lord of the Rings on youtube. One comment was, "It's not Boromir's fault. The Ring is evil. It's like.... yeah." And it hit me that it was Boromir's fault. Yes, the Ring is evil. It is influential. It has superior power and over time it...

    Television show for 2026....

The show was announced in April 2023, but has recently been stated to begin in 2026. It is proposed to be seven seasons over seven years to be another telling of the seven books with Harry Potter and co. So far the only concrete parts are the producers. No writers nor actors as of yet...

    First Law

I loved the first trilogy. I loved the three stand alone novels. But I got into it in the wrong order... I did not read them as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.... I read them as 4, 6, 1, 2, 3, 5. The trilolgy needs to be read as a unit, but the three stand alones just revolve around the trilogy...
