    On the Istari

I think most of the above is a form of hearsay, or, not to beat about the bush too much - made up (in part)! It is open to interpretation as to what the staves were for or could do... I only recall that Gandalf had one staff replaced - after Mordor, and by Elrond and his people, but not after...

    The passing of Arwen

Speaking as a non-woman, I dont think there is disregard on Aragorns part over Arwens 'sacrifice'. She chose willingly, as far as I can ever recall, and I do not believe Aragorn (from what Tolkien tried to 'get across') viewed his own mortality, or the time of ending it, as any form of hurt...

    Reading at the gym

Oof, thats one big cat! Oh good question :) How about... A sheet-music stand? Or an easel?

    Telepathy 01

For the most part I am stuck with words in my own head. Internal emotions dont give rise to complex communication within my own mind without translation into words. And as often as not that is more difficult than anything else. Some of my thoughts are concepts, but unless I am dreaming I must...

    Dead trees or active electrons

lol :) Aye, books will be with us for tens of generations down the line. But within my lifetime I expect to see a reduction in the number of books (to population) and a useful, practical e-book device like a tough magazine... Some alternative to the laptop. Flexible, tough, easy on the eyes and...

Help? An objective look at some titles.

Havent payed a deal of attention to Exoterica. Did you have more posts on this in the 'Critique', P.99? Knowing something of the background is a must to get a feel for titles that would fit... Are you sure you'd like Latin etymology within these titles though? Or a Latin-like derivative? How...

    Ice Pillars

Gorgeous photos, Treik. And also something I've never come across before! I spent some time in Cleveland once, long ago, around April and it was freezing then... Didnt see anything like this of course. Certainly wish I did.

    Nature vs nuture

Me too, both points... But - Yay! To Stephen Pinker :D I dub him the 'Combinatorial Man'. Take out that 'vs' (versus, not).

    Does Magic satisfy mature readers?

Brys, did you change font mid-sentence to make us go cross-eyed ? ;) Cant comment on Macleod, but it is rather severe to say magic is a must to solve some issue. Is that really the case? I've never thought of magic, its use or lack of, as necessity...

Things I WILL be watching this weekend

Timewatch, BBC2 tonight (Friday) 9pm - 'The Unknown Soldiers' "...From their base in Hawaii, their mission is to search for, identify and bring home all missing American servicemen from all previous conflicts. There are still 4,800 missing from World War I, 78,000 missing from World War II, 120...

    just ordered bonhunters!!

Mulch, I'll knock an extra 40% off for you if you tell me where you live ;) - I guess it would be quicker for me to wait for someone else to buy it and read it then borrow, than make an order... Ooo, Im just being stingey!

    Does Magic satisfy mature readers?

'The Law of the Major Balance'...Yes, Gollum, a big fan here :) I guess since we're already steeped in technology this makes sci-fi that much less disagreeable to some readers. Some authors are able to make magic a branch of science. In which case the reader might have a little too much...

    Does Magic satisfy mature readers?

Bah ;) Try explaining how magic in Janny Wurts 'War of Light and Shadow' works... which would require a decent study of it. Mature readers might be pleasantly surprised. For me (with my mechanical engineering degree) it beats a lot of sci-fi... Magic is not necessarily a Deus ex machina. (I...

Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker Series Adaptation

I would comment if my comments would help :P Besides, its been so long since I read them... ***Possible spoiler*** I think I remember Armour Of God being a very nasty guy at some point... And what was this mans name - he had a distorted hex tattoo, and he near killed Alvin too? (Didnt he...

    Where to start?

I shall have to look out for those two ('Enchantment' & 'Pastwatch') I think :) Really enjoyed Ender's Game. Also liked Alvin Maker books. Some really memorable scenes from those... Littlemissaltitude really seems to know her books...

    Ocean Black - Part 9

(HG hunches and rubs hands together... Will try include above mentions, too...) Eight days of gruelling travel. The first two -- being driven by horse-drawn coach should have been pleasant, but the driver's wearisome talk ensured otherwise. Even without the continuous questions salted with the...

Well for the fans of structure and metrum in poetry

kewl! Me no fan of structure nor metre, per se... But wouldst thou believe me? sight (of dreams, wind?) vision/thought suffering -> woe 'yet been fought' -> 'yet to be fought' 'fiery desire died to silence'... Dabbled and gone! ;)

    Understanding the mechanics

I wish I could've been accused of speed-reading... But, maybe because I have never rushed a book (or series), I can be left in the dark for... as long as it takes. I dont find I need to know a new worlds mechanics, if the mechanics are new and different. Oft this might just come from the writing...
