    Avatar (2009)

On second thought, there were less similarities than I previously thought. The similarities end in generalities, and the same can be said for many films and books. I rescind my earlier comment. Still, crazy epic movie. Worth seeing. And worth seeing in the theater.

    Avatar (2009)

I loved the movie. However, I thought the plot was slightly ripped from The Sky People by S. M. Stirling. There are just too many similarities. Then again, it isn't like the Going Native plot and the revamping of the European/Native American type story is new.

    I had a dream

I rarely remember mine, and when I do, such as right now, it's all just weird.

    Magazine Thread?

Imagine a little deer. He's walking slowly up to a stream and he's about to put his cute little nose down and drink the cool water, and, BAM!, you shoot 'em in the f'ing head! Or something like that. That movie is fantastic.

    Magazine Thread?

I subscribed to F&SF for a year and Asimov's for a year. I liked them both. If you're a budding writer and want to start establishing a name for yourself, these two mags, in the US at least, are the prime places to try to place your fiction. Tough competition though. I haven't cracked them yet.

    Terry Goodkinds new book

Turning twenty seven is terrifying for some... That's just hilarious.

    Sci-Fi/Fantasy: Gay characters?

I believe OSC has had gay characters in his fiction before. I'll have to start digging, but I remember him being outraged the J. K. Rowling didn't explicitly state in Deathly Hallows that Dumbledore was gay, saying something like, "Nobody cares if he's gay, but be a brave enough writer to say...

    Sci-Fi/Fantasy: Gay characters?

Anne Rice made a living with gay and/or bisexual vampires and was very explicit in her depictions. I'm sure you'll do fine with whatever characters you create provided they are intriguing and drawn well on the page.

    Stephen King - Best Book??

I'll admit that the ending to IT was one of my biggest, "WTF?" moments in all of King's novels. If memory serves me correctly, after all that buildup, which was substantial, it ends up being Turtle Power vs Spider Power?

    Terry Goodkinds new book

I believe the rule about sub-forums is that there needs to be five or more threads going in the general book section to warrant the creation of a sub-forum. While Goodkind does create heated discussion, it is rare and usually ends up in one thread at a time with months in between. As for all...

    Spacing after a full stop/comma

You can make the double space after sentence end and colon a rule in your grammar checker. It's buried in those preferences somewhere (on Word). Or you can just take the thing off. That is what I did. Rarely did I, or my reference book, agree with the things the grammar checker suggested...

    Editing your manuscript

I write one draft and set that aside for a while. After I've either worked on something else, or totally immersed myself into reading something else (perhaps a previous work that needs editing), I pick the rough draft of the story back up. I do a read through with a red pen, being as merciless...

    Spacing after a full stop/comma

Two spaces after sentence ends and colons doesn't bother me. It's a deep habit by now.

    Spacing after a full stop/comma

I thought it was a standard manuscript format thing. Two spaces after a period, colon, exclamation point, or question mark. One space after a comma, quotation mark, semicolon, or parenthetical. The reason, I believe, is so that typesetters instantly know by judging the spacing, whether it is...

    Terry Goodkinds new book

I'm amazed that people take Rand seriously anyway. The sex scenes in Atlas Shrugged are basically rape. That's her view of sex? Males just taking the females whenever they want? And as for her views on the Prime Movers and Looter Class... Well, without a working class, there will never be...

    Terry Goodkinds new book

I believe he has done just that. Let me consult the internet. Question: Lately I've found myself in many arguments defending your books against 'fans' who say they used to like your books but no longer do to the extent that they used to. Would you mind settling some debates by answering the...

    Terry Goodkinds new book

    j. d. said it very well. Writing polemical fiction isn't bad, only when a bad writer writes it. And Goodkind is a bad writer. A very, very bad writer.

    Terry Goodkinds new book

The biggest detractor from reading Goodkind's work is that he isn't interested in writing fiction. He's interested in using fiction as a vehicle for his views. But he's also a terrible writer, so he uses straw men to make his arguments look golden and then attacks anyone who disagrees. He...

Sword of Truth series (Terry Goodkind)

That book was the first time I realized that he was more interested in being a polemical writer than a good writer.
