I was kind of chuffed when people though I must e a guy(because I wrote one so well). Well, apart from that whole "Obviously Mr Knight hates women" one.... :)

    Perceptions of equity in sff

Not really ...see my books under a male pen name. Because men don't read fantasy by women. ETA SOME men don't, consciously, But many don;t sub-conciously ( and many women also -- it's ingrained -- women write icky romance suff, I write things where people get maimed by hot knives. So....) If...

Units of measurement in a non earth centric universe.

There's a reason they are not in the main story...and they are pretty clear within the story as well, as to how long measurements are (at least so you can come to a fair resemblance - the reader does not need to know exactly. This goes for many things. If the exactness becomes a plot point...

Units of measurement in a non earth centric universe.

So Check Check so far so normal er....what? Does the reader need to know this? Whatever units you use (and this applies to fantasy too) they need to be organic to the world/universe you have created AND be clear to the reader. Only use if necessary in other words. So, if you neeed to use...

    Is there a formula?

There are no rules when you are writing You may want to reconsider when trying to sell I know whereof I speak -- I've had several lovely rejections of "I love this book! I don;t know how to market it"

5 words you can cut from your MS

You forgot almost and suddenly But sometimes these words are actually needed. The trick is knowing when they are needed and when you are using them as a crutch.

Is it a requirement that a MC must change dramatically or even moderately in a novel?

Crime series where we follow a detective are somewhat different I think because the focus is on the crime not the protag. Hell even Watson (and Hastings) changed over time, even if the men they followed did not But in general, there should be some growth, or learning. Or it's just. "Hey this...

    Chapter Titles?

Depends I have used them in the dim and distant past, and then sent a book out to a beta reader with No Idea What To Call This Chapter as the chapter title... I would, if it served a story purpose. If not, numbers works for me.

Can anyone who makes the required effort become a “great writer”? I don’t think so.

Unless you have to use your genitalia to do engineering or whatever, I fail to see how a woman cannot be a talented engineer (or anything else) ETA Except perhaps sperm donor :P

Can anyone who makes the required effort become a “great writer”? I don’t think so.

I think there is a little bit of conflation here (And I have but skimmed the thread except for a few posts so bear with me if I'm repeating but it's late and I need to get up early"!) There is more than one way to be a good writer (or artist, or sculptor or actor). For the sake of this post...

Characters: How much to develop before starting, and do they need arcs?

I second that recc. A lot depends on how you write. I don't have much more than a basic idea before I start (for my last series it was "Disgraced guildsmen forced into highway robbery. Rob wrong coach. Maybe some clockwork") and went from there. The plot and characters turned up. And the...

    When is plagiarism not plagiarism?

Possibly but not, I think, using the name "orc", that was Tolkien's name for goblins, ETA no wait, it was Anglo Saxon for ogre and he "borrowed" it (however, I think I'm right in saying it's trademarked so you'd need permission to use it. I know someone who testified in a legal thingy on it as...

    When is plagiarism not plagiarism?

It's not plagiarism, unless you reuse the words. There is no copyright on broad ideas, only on their specifics and/or execution*. I can write about a boy who goes to wizard school and has to fight the big bad that killed his parents. It would be hugely derivative but not plagiarism. However, if...

Phrasing a statement as a question

It makes me see it that way -- they are unsure/being very polite/trying not to be antagonistic/don't want to be a bother but*... by using the lilt of a questioning tone to soften what might be seen as a criticism or them being pushy. I hear people do it a lot (working in retail you get a lot of...

Phrasing a statement as a question

In that case I would use the ? "I can't see them?" It may not be grammatically correct, but neither are most people when they speak and people often do say a statement as a question. In dialogue all bets are off :D

    Measurements in fantasy

So would I -- they were known, but not used on clocks (many early clocks only had the hour hand). If you POV has a pressing need to know minutes, perhaps? Sailing, for one example. This is a look at the evolution of using minutes (and degrees)

To use professional editing - or not?

Being not a spring chicken is not a reason to not learn how to edit Like writing, you can, or cannot If you cannot edit.... Writing is ALL about the rewriting/editing. That is where it all comes together. If you can;t do that... If you are writing for yourself? No probs. Or for your...

Afraid my story is too similar to others out there...

I think you have a double problem here Worrying about tropes and cliches - we all do that. Even when we don't need to BUT There is also the market to look at. And man have I seen too many prophecy stories -- the market was saturated with them a while ago. A bit like orphan boys who find a...

To use professional editing - or not?

The thing is... If you ever get picked up (different if you self pub but not by much) you NEED to know how to edit yourself an editor won't worry if you have minor grammatical twitches (we all have those*) or whathaveyou. ButWhen they say make it as clean as you can, that is what they mean. as...
