1.02 Game of Thrones - The Kings Road

Thank you very much everyone fro your help, I'm getting there. I've even printed off your dramatis personae Lenny, as if I can get my head round that and with the hbo site I'll be away! Certainly it looks for all your comments about the series so far as if the books should rise to the top of...

    Soooo... What'd Everybody Think?

Thank you for the pics Imp - he was one of the ones who'd not registered properly! And for the advice Conor, I'll head over to hbo.com while I've got a bit of time now. :)

1.02 Game of Thrones - The Kings Road

I haven't read the books and am really enjoying it so far. I'm struggling to tell all the characters apart (everyone has too many brothers -ok in books but hard work in films) but am helped by having someone better with faces next to me. :o I think I can tell where there is exposition missing...

    Soooo... What'd Everybody Think?

I've not read the books and am still having serious trouble telling some characters apart. I'm sure it would have been better if I'd known a bit beforehand. I'm loving it though and waiting for Ep 3 soon in England

    Hollywood can't do Science Fiction

Am I alone in thinking Dark Star was one of the best films ever? I saw it as the 'B-movie' to 2001 A Space Odyssey (Another 'best film ever, surely?) in probably the best cinematic experience of my life.

    Matter: What did you think?

I loved it. The only other of his novels I have read is Feersum Enjinn which I found quite confusing (quite apart from the spelling) - but I'm now heading Culture-wards

Deathly Hallows split into two movies, Good or Bad?

I think it is *so* much better split. I found myself a bit unhappy with the previous 2 as they missed out so much of the story, and rushed the plot. The first films were very true to the books and now, lengthening the film time, we are back to a much more satisfying event.

3.01: The Tears of Uther Pendragon (Part 1)

I think we're getting hints of changes to come with Merlin being irritated at Arthur after a battle, and almost explaining what he did... If I'm right then this bodes well.

    What Asimov book.....

I've jsut re-read that one and had forgotten how good it was. Also just re-read The End of Eternity I've read so many knocking his style, so it was good to remind myself just what a good story-teller he is (sorry was) - and with such a good imagination

Other Recommendations - for the unenlightened

Can I join in the thanks for these recommendations - as someone who likes the genre, you've given me a good few new ideas

    31.13: The Big Bang

Yes, SM is really good as the new lead...but always new he would be, since 'Blink'. But in my opinion it takes nothing away from RTD, who was just great!

The 10 Worst Science Fiction Series

I'm reminded of another thread about what matters, good story or good writing. Obviously both are important, but I have always read SF for the ideas...and the what if? Maybe that;s what some of the differences of opinion boil down to I can forgive sketchy characterisation if the ideas are good...

The 10 Worst Science Fiction Series

2 Foundation, Isaac Asimov This trilogy, while not as actually bad as some of those lower down this list, deserves its high place because it appears as number one in so many “greatest sf book series” lists. (From The Worst Science Fiction Series « It Doesn't Have To Be Right…) I wasn't being...

The 10 Worst Science Fiction Series

And Pern? A whole world, with concepts that have been emulated elsewhere. Great stories, wonderful ideas - not everyone's cup of tea, certainly many things I find a little grating but, as with the Foundation series, it seems a long jump from 'personal least favourite' to 'worst'. I...

The 10 Worst Science Fiction Series

Agreeing with jd and Connavar about the Foundation series. I find now that re-reading some fiction needs to be done with an eye to the era and it's mores. the stories and the 'what if' elements are excellent; many of Asimov's (and Clarke's for that matter) were ciphers and the books themselves...

    Avatar (2009)

Some post Dave!! Great synthesis. Hints at some kind of genius in Cameron to have given the film so may different resonances for different people. Another thought - as it is just a film it contains so much - To really get the most out of LotR you had to have read the books (or have someone...

    Terry Goodkind

Not intended perhaps, but not unlikely if you don't share his world-view and read it carefully enough to get a glimpse of his. I probably read too quickly and superficially, so had to wait till the later books to be hit over the head with that uncomfortable feeling - but I do like Mr's analysis!

    The Eleventh Hour.... SO????

Agreeing with most of the comments. Not sure about the new tune, initially anxious about Matt as Doctor, but more than reassured as it went on - and totally hooked by the time the 'taster' came along! Weeping angels!! How could they be anything less than the scariest things ever on Dr Who...

    Terry Goodkind

Wow! that's quite a statement! You have said so many different things that it's hard to know where to direct a reply! but I wonder if I might distil some thoughts as it seems you've gone into a lot of detail to elucidate my (and other's) gut feelings about the book. It seems that what started...
