    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Thanks again! And should these sections be separated from the main body of the scene/chapter? In the same way that we seperate different scenes, with a hash symbol?

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Thanks, John! I'll look forward to that ... Another quick question, if that's OK: In the book I'm working on at the moment, there are quite a few sections where my characters are reading documents, diary entries, etc ... I've been using Arial as font for the majority of the book, but I was...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Hi John, Any idea when we can expect to see a new Ramsey Campbell book on the shelves? I've just started reading The Grin Of The Dark, and thoroughly enjoying it!

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Sounds like a lot of work, John! Mind you, at least you don't have to deal with the usual back-stabbing nonsense that seems to occur in most offices ... After all, you can't stand by the water-cooler and spread gossip about yourself, can you?

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Will do! The was only one other Ramsey Campbell book on their shelves, and that was some kind of non-fiction collection ... Why have other horror writers - James Herbert, Richard Laymon, Dean Koontz, etc - always been in major bookstores, but not him?

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Hi John, Spotted what looked like a new Ramsey Campbell novel in Borders the other day: The Grin of the Dark ... Is that his latest offering, or has it been around for a while? Dave

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I'm glad you appreciate black humour, John ... my next book's full of the stuff ... I've never read The Wasp Factory, but I've heard people describe it as Horror/Comedy, which is exactly the type of thing that I'm trying to capture ... Will have to pick up a copy, and see how Mr Banks goes...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Did you know that John Fogerty was once sued by a record company for plagiarising himself? Apparently, the publishing rights for all the Creedence Clearwater Revival songs were owned by the Record Label, and Fogerty released a solo album, which consisted of a song that sounded quite familiar...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Thanks John, Anyway, enough procrastination ... back to the book! By the way, I've just read this on another site: "People who exhibit procrastination, appear to be prone to internet addiction." Hmmm ... I think it's time to seriously re-examine my life!

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

So have you ever received any submissions, that really shouldn't be novel length? Novels that are basically short-story ideas, with ridiculous amounts of padding?

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Hi John, As an editor, do you ever suggest a lot of cuts to client's work? Or is it more to do with character, plot, pacing, etc? I know word count has been discussed quite a lot on this thread, but I was just wondering whether there's ever a huge difference between the word count of a...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Here's one that I've been wondering about lately ... If a hypothetical writer gets paid an advance of £5000, but only manages to sell £2000 worth of books ... is the writer then in debt to the publisher for the remaining amount? (Not that it's a problem I can see myself facing anytime soon ...)

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Hmmm, I think we were in danger of slipping into Carry-On Film territory there ... But maybe that's not a bad thing: "Carry-On Chrons" ... It has got a bit of a ring to it. Perhaps we should all collaborate on the script. Ah, if only Sid James was still around ...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Wow ... talk about burning your bridges. I wonder what he actually hoped to achieve by that? Did he honestly expect every relevant editor/publisher to drop to their knees, and shout: "We were wrong! We can see that now! Please let us publish your book! Please!" And couldn't he have better...

Writing SF/F short stories - useful for novelists?

I agree! That's the one - possibly the only - part of my writing that I'm ever really sure about; which ideas are novels, which ideas are short stories, and which ideas are scripts .... I'm not sure why that is though. Also, I find that short stories or scripts are sometimes a lot harder to...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I suppose it could also be down to the kind of audience a succesful artist initially attracts ... Woody Allen, for instance ... Didn't he actually coin the phrase, "the early funny ones" in reference to his own films? It seems like a lot of Woody Allen fans lost interest after his 1970s stuff...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I've certainly lost interest in a few different authors, for that exact reason ... Mind you, I think you find that kind of thing in most creative fields; Music, literature, film, etc ... An artist's early work is normally considered to be their...

    "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Well, I hope you'll enjoy my next offering, John. (Should be submitting it in few months, with any luck) I've been trying my best to improve on the last book, based on your advice ... And at the end of the day, a writer can only get better with each new project, can't they? At least, that's...
