The Promethead: A different kind of Space Opera

A search for answers through the ashes of a recently fallen galactic civilization: Two centuries after the sudden galaxy wide collapse, Althea Ram seeks to understand the forces which caused it. This is complicated by the nature of the invaders who control the most advanced technologies and...

    the lost tales

All in all, I found it enjoyable to spend some time back in the B5 universe, and while the stories were little more than interpersonal set pieces to be played out predictably, I'm not unhappy about watching them. As for plot and dialogue, Straczinski continues to demonstrate both his strengths...

    10,000 Bc (2008)

Re: 10,000 Bc Release Info I saw the trailer on TV recently, and it looks like they've updated the old One Million BC formula (see 1940's one with Victor Mature and the 1960's with Rachel Welch - for good if cheesy fun) combined it with The Scorpion King. It looks like fun, but may very well...

Summer Glau (River Tam) Slated to play a Terminator

Summer acquits herself fairly well as the latest (and tiniest) terminator in the franchise. She's presented as a bit more developed and mysterious as opposed to previously seen models. My only worry is that she's starting to get typcast as a size 3 who can flatten a buick.

    Who's the coolest general?

I have always thought much of Cincinnatus, the epitome of the farmer-general. Got to respect a man who heeds the call when needed, acts to commit the minimum of bloodshed, and when the crisis is passed, gives up all the power and returns to his farm.

Can You Remember Your First Science Fiction Novel?

Sovereign, by R.M. Meluch from 1979. A very rare find, these days, that still holds to the classic SF motif that you can write an epic space opera, explore a sophisticated universe in under 200 pages.

    Matrix Rip-Off?

Let us not forget the Doctor Who serial 'The Deadly Assassin' in 1976 where the Doctor spends time battling enemies in a virtual reality environment called 'The Matrix'.

    Doctor Who Quotes!

Some of my favs: "I feel disoriented." "This is the Disorientation Centre." "That makes sense." The Doctor and Sarah, in "The Android Invasion" "There's a corpse by the wood." "What sort of corpse?" "A dead one; what other sort is there?" Colby and Fendelman, in "Image of the...

What is so appealing about the early Dr Who episodes?

Having begun my enjoyment with the Tom Baker era, but now having seen stories from all the eras (including the 8th Doctor's audio), each and every era have their charm and attraction. Certainly there are the typical cliche's of every era of the series from the '60s to the '90s, and even this...

    Star Trek (2009)

Despite JJ Abrams pedigree, this appears to be the nadir of Parmounts attempt to recreat the appeal of the Star Trek franchise. I personally have severe doubts as to any positive result from the new movie, considering the suits repeated failures at updates with Voyager (Star Trek meets Space...

    Ban Plastic Bags

Here in Canada, many of the discount supermarkets pile up their produce boxes at the cash registers for people to use as an alternative to plastic bags. As such, I barely use either paper bags or plastic bags. This takes the principle of reduce, reuse, recycle to the highest point I've seen...

    Dollhouse: Whedon and Dushku series.

Looks like Whedon is turning into the new Harlan Ellison of 'I'll never work in television again'. This looks like Blade Runner/Total Recall crossed with La Femme Nikita by way of The Long Kiss Goodnight (or maybe I'm dreaming The idea appears to be, at first glance, a step back for him in...

BSG Similar to Space Above & Beyond

To be fair, Space above and Beyond is a military sci-fi show which takes place on a aircraft carrier in space, featuring a group of pilots fighting a war against an enemy they don't understand, and features some references to genetic engineering and androids. Hmm... One could say exactly the...

    3.20: Crossroads, Part Two

I do agree this episode, and the two others preceeding to build it up were expertly written, preformed and directed. But clearly they were meant as set pieces in the misdirection that Moore's Battlestar Galactica is all about. We the audience (as well as the characters) are continued to be...

    3.16: Dirty Hands

Would they even need a union if the tech in the refinery ship was brought up to the same standards as equipment in the rest of the fleet? Unions are typically created in industrial societies where workers are being opressed, hence the look of the episode. Yet there are plenty of industries...

    Board Games

Top on My list is 'Britannia' the risk-like game of the conquests of Britain from The Romans to the Normans. Most of the variants, History of the World, Hispania, Rus and such I've also found lots of fun.

Wikipedia Analysis of 'Nova' Samuel R Delany

I do remember the Header on my version of Nova. The article is certainly very thorough. Mind you, it still doesn't quite capture the brilliance of Delany's greatest piece of writing. Best thing, read the book again and again:)

    Samuel R Delany

Hope you are enjoying Nova, I consider it one of the best SF novels of all time! Babel 17 is also quite good. I can't stand pretty much anything of his from the '70s on, as they become bloated and self indlugent excuses for Delany to reflect on his own lifestyle in the guise of SF novels which...
