    Current Plays: February

Richochet! Extreme! Lost Worlds! Yeah, I dig break out games. I can't get into the fantasy stuff. I really like the boxes, they sound neat, but I'd much rather someone just play a game of it, write it down and then let me read it.

    Sing O Muse! (Epic Poetry)

I had a class a couple of years ago that required trying it. Most of it ended up being just fiction with lots of line breaks. Oh well. But Jane Yolen has written some epic poetry, so has another female fantasy writer, but I can't remember who.

Conflicts in philosophical viewpoints (knivesout...this is for you)

I think this is where I'm having the problem. I do not agree that communal living=hippie. I think the idea of personal responsibility is the underlying theme in both books, just illustrated in different ways. (I haven't followed the links yet, A Mighty Wind is on and I haven't seen it yet, so...

Best Wheel of Time novel so far?

I was expecting to hate New Spring, but I really liked. The original was in a Legends compilation and the full length novel felt like I was getting to know old friends better.

    Hardback or Paperback

I'm going with trades as favorites, but I usually end up with mass market just because they fit better in my purse. But with certain titles, I always buy mass market so that I always have a relatively cheap one to give to someone who needs to read it.

Best Wheel of Time novel so far?

I can never remember which book is which, I started them only recently and read the first 8 in a few months all at once. Which ever one starts (oh, don't look down if you don't want to be spoiled). . . . . . . . . . .right after he cleanses the source.

Conflicts in philosophical viewpoints (knivesout...this is for you)

Okay, in my "hi" thread, knivesout said that he feels Heinlein's politics are problematic and that he seems to espouse two completely different views in Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers. (I tried to copy and paste, but it wouldn't let me, something about editing mozilla config...

Novels Reworked for the Silver Screen

What about the new version of Hitchhiker's Guide thats coming out in the summer? I have only seen a really short announcement of it, but it looks like they took the bird guide and are making it the regular guide. I guess that means they can only make the first couple of sequels before nothing...

Novels Reworked for the Silver Screen

Oh I'm so excited. Lethem is one of my favorites, and I think Ed Norton doing it will be great. I got so sucked into that book, I almost started with the tourettic outbursts.

    Has reading ruined your relationship(s)?

    1. Not ever, my reading habits actually brought me some of the best relationships of my life. 2. Depends what I'm reading. I've been known to call off of work to read for 16 hours. 3. Only those people I don't want to talk to. 4.Only sometimes. 5. Completely. And whats wrong with that?

How good is Stephen King as a writer?

Maybe try his collection The Bachman Books. Four long stories, all of which I thought were really good. The original The Running Man is in it, and its much better than the movie they made. As for his big ones, The Stand is one of my favorites. The whole battle between good and evil and they...

How good is Stephen King as a writer?

I love him, he scares the pants off of me, and completely sucks me in. I love that so many of his books are tied in together. However, and thats a big however, he is losing it. Dreamcatcher was terrible. Just truly awful, and the movie was even worse. I think he needs to spend more time...

    Heinlein and women?

Isn't it possible that its not that his characterizations aren't realistic, they are just idealized? Thats how I see them anyway. I think that if women were not raised in an atmophere of such pettiness and fear as they are now, thats how we would be.

    Heinlein and women?

I think one of the most important things to remember when trying to analyze his women is his wife, Ginny. As far as I can tell, not only is she pretty much the template for most of the women in all of his books, she pretty much IS Maureen. And Jubal's secretaries? In a perfect world, when...

    Unpublished Heinlein novel discovered

Its a great book. It really is just social commentary with a thin veil of novel on top of it, but still lots of fun. For those who don't like being given very detailed descriptions of how to fix the economy, maybe don't read this one. Its kind of like Heinlein does Rand.

    Best Robert Heinlein novel?

Well, I have to go with Time Enough for Love in combination with Methuselah's Children. Job is a close second. And to the person who didn't like the apparent character rehash, yeah, that is definitely true, but they are SUCH GREAT characters.
