Too much politics/strategy in a book

Not having read it, I still like what John Scazi has to say about it What I Think About Atlas Shrugged Whatever

Too much politics/strategy in a book

That part we agree on. In fact, I enjoy it when different types of societies, with their sunny side and their downside, are shown. The different facts about factions and leaders and such can easily get too much for me and ruin an otherwise good story, though.

Too much politics/strategy in a book

Anyone else in her who gets annoyed when a story goes a lot into issues like which clan/country sides with which against which and why? I like fantasy a lot and I like gritty, low-fantasy too. However, it almost never fails to spoil a book for me when they go too much into things like I...

    January's Joyous Journeying Between Jacketcovers

Bad form to reply to yourself - I know, but I let the die rule and will start with Assassin's Apprentice next.

    January's Joyous Journeying Between Jacketcovers

Okay, so examns being over and all that, I finally have some time for pleasure reading again and I finally finished Wintebirth which I started in September or so, so you can talk about getting stalled there. I probably could've finished it sooner, but have no been very motivated to read it...

    What We're Reading in September!

That sounds like a series I'd like.

Books You Should Like But Don't

I should've seen that one coming :D Either way - I've tried Mort and Guards! Guards!, but failed to get into either.

Books You Should Like But Don't

Robert Jordans Wheel of Times series. I couldn't even get through the first book. Also Terry Pratchett. I've tried with two of his books, but they didn't catch on. Everybody else seems to rave about him, but I just can't get into the books.

Books You Should Like But Don't

I'm against book burning, no matter how much I dislike the book in question.

Books You Should Like But Don't

*Applauds* I read the book for class this spring and I didn't like it either.

Books that oddly don't catch you

I enjoyed it enough that I'm thinking of rereading it at some point, which I rarely do with any books, but I wouldn't say I loved it. I just thought it was really great.

So what is your August majesty reading?

39 pages into Narrating People by Svend Aage Madesen, I gave up. Normally, I try to give books I've picked at least 100 pages before giving up on them, but this one is kind of a collection of short stories and not something I can wrap my head around right now. Now I'll give Winterbirth by Brian...

So what is your August majesty reading?

Not yet. So far I've read The Fall and The Plague and I plan to read more of his work. He's really good.

So what is your August majesty reading?

Last night, I finished reading The Plague (Albert Camus). It was really good - reminding me a little of Kafka in places with the many rules, the (seemingly) hopeless struggle, the resigned accept of things and especially with the many odd meetings the journalist had when trying to escape the...

    Adam Roberts

I remember enjoying it and would be happy to read more of that kind. Then again, I happen to like science fiction which describes various political systems - especailly the ones depicting anarchy. Not that I'd want to live there, but what's nice to live in is frequently also boring to read about.

So what is your August majesty reading?

Agent to the Stars is quite funny and quite different from his other fiction. I'm going to order The God Engines soon too and also Metatropolis where he contributes with a short story.

    Translations

There's a lot less difference in writing than in pronounciation. Danish doesn't have an as close relation between spelling and pronounciation as Swedish and Norwegian does and that's, IME, what causes the most problems. We also speak fast, mumble quite a bit and skip pronouncing parts of some...

    Translations

Very true and I suppose there's also some cultural difference to consider when translating. However, it also happens that the translator gets too creative and that can ruin it too. This is something people will mostly notice in subtitles, since you have both the original version spoken and the...
