    C.J. Cherryh

This is one reason I like her books so much. The stories and characters are complex, but never for any simple reason. This is an author who respects her audience and offers a satisfyingly complex story that she expects us to be able to understand, and presents some really interesting things to...

It's December. What are you reading?

I'm currently a few chapters into Rescue Mode, by Ben Bova and Les Johnson (no spoilers, please).

From Way, Way Back in Your Book Backlog

I've got books that have been languishing unread on my shelves since 1976. I can't believe that I once considered selling my Dune books because I'd had them for several years and hadn't read them; I finally did read them one week in the spring of 1984 when I had the flu and was trying to force...

Can You Remember Your First Science Fiction Novel?

I remember reading SF short stories as early as my Grade 6 reading class. Sometimes a Bradbury story or another author's short story would be included in the reading curriculum. I read my first SF novel in December 1975, although I can't remember exactly which one it was - either 2001: A Space...

    C.J. Cherryh

You're right about not skimming when reading Cyteen. It's one of the most complex SF books I've ever read. I've re-read it at least half a dozen times, and each time I'm still gaining new insights to parts of it I hadn't fully understood before. Are you planning to read the sequel, Regenesis...

    C.J. Cherryh

Well, it was enough to bring me back, after more than 2 years. I loved Regenesis.

    Philippa Gregory

The Respectable Trade is absolutely the worst Philippa Gregory book I've read so far. The characters are flat, they are unbelievably stupid (except for the hero, of course), and the love story that just happens out of nowhere is ridiculous.

Herbert, Frank: How do the newer Dune series books compare with the Originals?

*zzzz* No, not really... (just finished Sandworms and need time for the brain-ache to go away)

RAH Reading Group - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

This particular cover makes it obvious that the artist did not read the story. I can't think of anything in this novel that would lead to such a visual depiction of what happened.

    Big mistakes in sf.

Sorry, no. :( But I save all my PMs so I'll find it and do some searching.

Torchwood crosses the ocean to hit States

We get it here in Canada, on the CBC network. And so far I've found it absolutely boring. I'm not watching it anymore.

    Dune and science fiction

No, it isn't sacred. But it is worthy of more respect than Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert have accorded it.

    Big mistakes in sf.

Who wanted to write a book? (btw -- hello, Omphalos -- it's Hypatia from Arrakeen! ;))

    Seat belts and Star Trek

The reason the Enterprise didn't get seatbelts in the Original Series is because the producers/directors figured it would be more dramatic to have people fall out of their chairs than just sit there, safe, during battle. There's a scene in The Motion Picture where Kirk gets a seatbelt of sorts...

    C.J. Cherryh

Reading C.J. Cherryh is a wonderful treat. Of course, it depends on whether you enjoy her SF or her fantasy (I don't particularly care for her fantasy novels). Downbelow Station was the first Cherryh novel I ever read (and got her to autograph). It's a good introduction to the...

    Dune and science fiction

The question of how much mankind advances during which era depends on whether or not you accept the new novels' retconned history of the Butlerian Jihad. Frank Herbert had the major tech/cultural advances happen over a logical time frame of several millennia -- and then it was thousands of years...

    Dune and science fiction

Out of curiosity, sarakoth, what didn't you like about the Dune universe? Are you speaking of Frank Herbert's original canon, or including the Anderson/Herbert add-ons?

    Big mistakes in sf.

    That's exactly it. :)

    Love or hate him????

What a horrible case of comma-itis! :( I remember back in elementary school (grade 5, I think -- I was nine years old at the time), when our teacher read Ivanhoe to us. It helped that she also taught French; when the principal subbed for her one day, he said, "If you don't mind, I'm just...
