hello everyone, and thanks for reading the post and trying to help. i am trying to recall a book that I happened to come across while I spent the weekend in jail for speeding and not paying the fine. The main character is male and wakes up in some sort of labyrinth or prison and has strange runes all over him. It turns out the runes are magic and begin to actiavate without him knowing how and he has to learn to use the runes to get out of the labyrinth. I may be off a little on the plot but it was almost 15 years ago and I just remember loving the novel. Thanks again for the help!

That book is unfamiliar to me.

Perhaps if you go to Wikipedia or Google and type in the keywords 'male, man, prison or labyrinth, runes, magic, activate, asleep, coma (?), the time era the story takes place such as the colonial period or the old west or ancient Rome, page numbers and any names you think can remember. Then look at the time frame. Eliminate all books written after 2002.

Good luck.

Sounds a little reminiscent of the Death Gate Cycle.

The magical runes on the skin and the labyrinth definitely sound a bit like the Death Gate books, it's been a long time since I read it but I think the sixth book Into The Labyrinth may have started with some of the protagonists imprisoned in the Labyrinth.

I have tried that. It hasn't come up... yet. I try every now and again.

This was a one book only story. It wasn't that long of a book either. Easy to read in a long afternoon on the porch. Good book too.

Apologies I'm just sticking my nose in here while I'm trying to put off doing something else....

I haven't read this, but how about this from Wikipedia on the Death Gate Cycle, as suggested a few days ago?

The Death Gate Cycle - Wikipedia

Patryns[edit]
Patryns are represented as having the same height and build as humans, but the current generations of the series are all in excellent physical shape due to the hardships of the Labyrinth. They are born with brown hair that turns white from the tips up. They are all possessed of excellent magical ability to varying degrees, also a necessity for their survival. All Patryns are capable of using rune magic, which manipulates the Wave of possibilities, allowing Patryns to view a myriad of possible outcomes and select one to occur. The more unlikely the possibility, however, the more difficult to conjure. Patryn use of runes is portrayed as less elegant than Sartan, as it relies more on physical representations such as their tattoos, the use of voice, and drawing the runes in air or on a surface. Patryn runes complement Sartan runes, and can sometimes be used to accomplish the same tasks. Patryns also tend to be loners, but are intensely passionate due to the hardships of the Labyrinth. They will aid one another without question, but generally put their own survival above that of others. Patryns who form groups tend to follow a single ruler, such as the Headman of tribes in the Labyrinth and Xar of the liberated Patryns.

Actually, sounds very interesting. But it's not what I'm looking for. The people in question are just human. The earth had been moved around Jupiter, i believe because they sun has gotten bigger because of a failed experiment many many years before and had gotten way too hot. In fact, the only other people on the planet are "kids".. They are not kids though. They are grown adults that have used the "booths" to stop the aging at about 12 years of age. They are 100's of years old.

WOOT!!! Found it!!

"A World Out of Time", by Larry Niven

Wow! I know that book but I never would have gotten there from what you wrote. There is no magic involved just light speed time dilation and very advanced Science much, much, much, later. ---- But I think you will like it for sure!

Edit: Okay, I found the problem your other thread asks for help finding "A World Out of Time." This one is looking for another book.
