Discussion thread -- March 2017 75-word Writing Challenge

The poll didn't start well for me and I didn't check in yesterday so just woke to find voteage from Andrew Lambert and Ashleyne, honorabubbles from Ursa, TDZ, JohnnyJet, Mr Orange and Hugh, and CatsCradle ensuring a vote was logged.

Many thanks all, you lovely people. Cheered me up on a drizzly workday morning.

Edit: Hang on, Perpetual Man sneaked in a quiet vote under the radar as well. Cheers!

The last line from DEO is so good it almost had me changing my mind but mosaix effort was the one that grabbed me the most out of all the entries when I first read it. So mosaix it is.

It's down to bribery now.

Mosaix has my vote in the tie-break.

I'd like to thank Wruter, Cat's Cradle and Dusty Zebra for the mentions, Phrebrat and The Judge for the shortlistings and Aine for the vote.

That means a considerable amount to me as a newbie here and a first-time particpant in anything like this. It's such a thrill to have contributed something that has given some enjoyment.

Best Wishes,
David

Hey, DEO! I received that Amazon gift card, so I've just now cast my tie-breaker vote: David Evil Overlord. (Sorry, I could not resist!:))

I really liked both stories, but DEO finished just slightly higher than mosaix in my original lists...I re-read, and by the narrowest of margins, I will hold to my earlier listings. It's very close though, good luck to both of you!!

A big thank you to Cathbad, Starbeast and Stable for mentioning my odd little entry. :)

edit: also, saulfan and Andrew Lambert and Aine - and any other first-time Challengers - you all did great! Please come back for the new challenges in April!

Another tie, after all those months without!

DEO appeared on my original shortlist just before I pruned it to a reasonable size, so he gets my vote. The fact this gives me a chance for revenge -- I've tie-breaked with both DEO and mosaix in the past, but DEO had the grace to tie with me in the tie-break itself, but mosaix beat me into smithereens -- is simply fortuitous. Honest. :D

(And it's back to a tie in the tie-break with my vote!)

Ooh, more mentions/shortlistings, for which many lobster bisque thanks (we're all out of consomme) TDZ, LittleStar and Ursa. And double ooh, I got another sneak vote -- truffle-stuffed roast beast/bird/vegetable of your choice, farntfar!

... despite TJ's best effort at subliminal zebra-vote-getting with her title.
Ha! I thought you'd get it! For those who didn't get the reference, the title of my piece "What a piece of work..." is actually a quote from Hamlet:

What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form, and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals!

The irony of using it for a man who deliberately engineers his master's failure and execution in order to step into his job, which itself involves murdering guests of the Emperor, rather appealed to me, as did the fact that in common parlance "What a piece of work" is now used for exactly such reprehensible people.

On behalf of the first timers, thanks, CC.
Next month, I won't leave it until 3 hours to go, before deciding to enter.
I'll get all my writing gear on - smoking jacket, cravat, Exeter stetson, etc. and will pace around my lounge rug, thinking amazing thoughts...that is, how to nobble all of you amazing writers :)

Mosaix got my tiebreaker vote, having been one of the main contenders for my original vote anyway.
