Book Hauls!

Might be getting a mix of anthropology books (my major) and science fiction books soon. I like world-building, especially when it comes to culture. I'm just not very good at it myself. But the authors I read are good at it! :)

The friend who sent those 23 Simaks and the Brunner and I have been sending books back and forth. Below is a picture of a bunch of books that another friend sent last year. Most of these I sent to my Simak-Brunner friend. Don't think of this traffic in books as a trade. Just keeping books moving. My Simak buddy had, I gather, read and reread at least some of the Simaks so much that he need only look at them to remember the stories. He does like van Vogt a lot.

My second last book haul was The Heart of What Was Lost by Tad Williams. In preparation for reading it, I was going to reread Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. So I went searching for the books, and can't find them. I either lent them out, or gave them away. So this month's shop was repurchasing the series. Also got The Scarlet Tides by David Hair.

still waiting on Old Man's War, and in the mean time I've acquired a few more ;)

a Pat Cadigan omnibus containing Mindplayers, Fools and Tea From An Empty Cup
Kate Wilhelm - Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang
Adam Roberts - Yellow Blue Tibia
Stephen Donaldson - Gap Into Conflict
Barrington J Bayley - Garments of Caean and The Fall of Chronopolis
Alfred Bester - The Stars My Destination
Fritz Leiber - The Wanderer
David Brin - Kil'n People and Sundiver

I can't look at that. Instead, I will admire my three hundred and eighty (380) 'UFO-related' books that I found, inside a folder in a back alley on the internet.

This came in the mail yesterday without the cool dust jacket.

Wonder if this would qualify for the travel book thread Extollager started a while back. I may try to sneak it in anyway. Might start it sooner than not.

I decided the other day that I need to have a rest from acquiring more books, so you can guess what happened . . .

I ordered some kindle products.

Pat Cadigan - Synners
John Brunner - Stand On Zanzibar
Samuel R Delaney - Nova
Kathleen Goonan - Queen City Jazz
Theodore Sturgeon - More Than Human
Harlan Ellison - The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World

. . . and three proper books :)

Damon Knight (editor) - 13 French Sci-Fi Stories
Michael Bishop - Transfigurations
Greg Egan - Permutation City

Now. . . I intend to try and have a break from book buying until I've saved up some funds, wish me luck ;)

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing, mostly with sf megapacks by less known authors. At 99 cents you can hardly go wrong. There's two more I want to order when I get home but I can't recall their names.

Well, look what just arrived via Amazon today:

A little something to offset Seveneves every 200 pages or so.

Found this at Goodwill the other day:

This isn't my copy however, wish it were. Mine's pretty beat up but still worth the $2.99 I paid for it. Couldn't log in to Photo Bucket to last night to upload a scanned image so I copied this from ebay. 1954 British hardback, all stories from the magazine Startling Stories and contains a Jack Vance story that doesn't sound familiar, at least by its title, "Noise."

Picked this up at Barnes & Noble tonight with a gift card I got for my birthday last month:

Though each topic is dealt with quickly they seem well researched and presented in a style that doesn't induce tedium.

Disappointment amidst the joy, I returned from Devon tonight (visiting my Dad) and found two of my recent purchases on the doormat.

One (The Martian Chronicles) was fine, the other less so.

Permutation City was described as "Condition: Used - Very Good - The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged."

It turned out to be "Condition: Used - to defend the previous owner from an attack by a wild animal"

Grumpy email sent.

Oh dear. I had one like that via Amazon once but as it had come from the States, thought it would be too much hassle and expense to return something that only cost minimum plus postage charge.

This week picked up two Robin Hobbs novels which completed the 'Rainwilds' four-set, and a Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci novel, Conrad's Fate. All pretty cheap from charity shops.

I looked on ebay, but managed to resist.

I looked again and resisted.

Then I had a skim through an old Buzzfeed article (Best of 2015) to see if there was anything to add to my list, and that's where it all went wrong. ;)

On the way:

Neal Asher - Prador Moon / Dark Intelligence
Arthur C Clarke - The Fountains of Paradise
George R Stewart - Earth Abides

Good selection. All quite different, all very good. Be interested to hear what you think of them.

I know my goal was to not make any new purchases this year, but no one truly believed that did they?

A couple of Wodehouse came in:

Ex-library books with bonus plastic covers. Lovely right? Then I opened Right Ho, Jeeves.

Torn cover pages!
I think I'll go and have a little lie down now...
