OK another question. what does legionaries say to you. They the heavy military division of the corps. like startships troopers film.

No, it just means a soldier in a legion. Legion being a Roman term, I believe, usually consisting of 3 to 6 thousand men.

I was going for soldier vibe for that unit. They more soldier type than ranger type. It like the difference with regular and bomb squad or swat.

I don't think any modern army names it soldiers as legionaries. It's a very archaic term, used specifically to refer to Roman soldiers before the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Roman rip-off that never almost never has Centurions or Optio's.

I've always preferred the Soviet Shock or Assault labels for heavy divisions/armies.

Sigh.

Yes, that is exactly what I said.

If only I had actually typed that.
Sigh.

I couldn't tell if you were talking about adoption of the term "Legion" in fiction or the real world. So I asked.

Sorry?

Many units have nicknames - for example Big Red One (US 1st Infantry Division - so named because of the insignia) or the Scots Greys (named because of the large predominantly grey horses they used as a cavalry unit).

I'd find something about the unit that differentiates them from other units and give them a name based on that quality(example: if they wear armour and are an elite unit, you could steal from history and call them The Old Ironsides)

Obviously, the unit would need a formal name (1st Heavy Division?) but everybody would just refer to them as their nickname...battle seems lost, commander turns to his exec. officer and says send in the Ironsides:)
