Fantasy Murder Mysteries

Two books that I can't remember very well:

The first was about a tubby PI (and maybe a wizard) in a fantasy city. He had a assistant who was a huge barbarian woman of the Red Sonja type. I think there was a series of these: they were quite short and very tongue in cheek. They were written in the 1970s or 80s.

The second was a recent book about a two human cops in a fantasy city. It was a book of short stories and I think the lead characters may have been husband and wife. I'm pretty sure the book contained short stories, and the author was American. Sorry not to be more precise!

A little bit of detective work seems quite fitting for this thread anyway ;)

Glen Cook' s P I Garret novels. Very entertaining. (y)

It sounds very much like Simon R. Green's Hawk & Fisher series, except he's British rather than American. I wonder if you read the omnibus, Swords of Haven: The Adventures of Hawk & Fisher like I did? I think they might also have been short novels rather than short stories, but it sounds like it could be those.

Some of his back catalogue has finally come out on kindle now through Jo Fletcher books, so you might be able to scan the first page and see if seems familiar. Not strictly murder mystery, but he also writes a Secret Histories series currently, which is kind of a Fantasy James Bond. Plus, of course, he wrote the utterly awesome Deathstalker series.:)
