The last man to walk on the Moon, commander of the Apollo 17 mission, Gene Cernan has died, aged 82.
He was one of only three people to go to the Moon twice and the last man to leave a footprint there in 1972.
He also spoke the last words from the surface: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind."

I find it incredibly depressing that there's now no-one left on this planet that has ever stood on another world. Farewell to the last of the men with the right stuff.

Buzz Aldrin is still with us. And several of the other guys, too. Cernan was just the last one to actually do it, not the last one remaining.

Nevertheless, it's getting to be a smaller and smaller group. Time we got back up there, and beyond. RIP, sir.

Sad news, and sad too that what many thought was just a stepping stone was really a pinnacle (for now).

I think we've lost six of the twelve that walked on the moon.

Duh, of course Buzz is still with us, and others. I must have misread the sense of the original story, thinking last man to walk on the moon equated to last survivor of those that had walked...
