Destroying Worlds Since 2015
I've heard it said before that there are maybe a couple dozen standard plots, and everything is a variation on that. Today, someone mentioned that Robinson Crusoe, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Castaway, possibly the Swiss Family Robinson, and The Martian are all variations on the same story. And Star Wars is a Chosen One story, which is so common as to have become a cliché.
I'm just curious--what other groups of books can you think of that follow a common story arc? How many standard story arcs are there, really? I'd like to see the statement in the first sentence actually tested.
