The Power of the Daleks

I thought it was announcing a film, then. :)
Looks like it will play as a film in theaters Nov 14, then begin running as a BBCA series 5 days later.
Is this something that has already shown in the UK? I had not heard of it until I saw a trailer while watching Dirk Gently, Holistic Detective.

An animated resurrection of lost Dr Who Serial and one two lost serials Id like to have seen. I will buy it on dvd.:)

Maybe they'l do The Dalek Master Plan next .:)

There are no episodes of Doctor Who that don't exist in audio form - i.e. the BBC have the audio tracks for everything (thanks to many people with tape recorders and too much patience ;) ). The BBC is releasing a full length animation with the original sound track - like episodes one and four of The Invasion were released.

I apologise if I had that wrong but since they keep asking people to search for such recordings I was under the impression that they weren't currently known to exist. I know that all shows were filmed live and recordings were not officially kept by the BBC but that various studio engineers and cameramen made copies. I also know that they have slowly been building up a collection of such recordings and had a big "find" just last year in someone's attic.

Not really impressed with the animation style, based on the ads they've played so far. Animating old soundtracks is an interesting idea, but I would've thought the artwork would be better. It seems like they put a lot of effort into the Daleks but the people look somewhat crude in my opinion. Maybe they'll use a different animator if they do any future projects.

Its too bad the BBC scraped so many tv programs.

As to the animated redo of Power of the Daleks. It's better then nothing.

It is better than nothing, you're right. It's nice to see some effort made to bring some of these lost episodes back to life.

Very True. I hope at some point they rdo The Dalek Master Plan .:)

Got a copy of this on DVD. Halfway through and have to say the animation is absolutely terrible. I don't know what the BBC were thinking but this looks like the kind of animation from the days of Crystal Tips and Alistair or a Fischer Price My First animation with Photoshop kind of thing.

Storyline seems OK but a major visual disappointment.

I won't be buying any other releaes like this unless they have a major rethink.

I watched the first episode today, and I agree with your assessment of the animation. I can see why they wanted to match the black and white of the missing episode, but I don't understand the crude animation. Budget constraints?

Possibly budget constraints given the financial state of the BBC. But, if so, I think it's short sighted. It could be a lucrative little market if they've got a lot of recordings/scripts from erased shows that they could develop. The poor quality immediately kills the market in my opinion.

Why didn't they go the anime route?

It's not like human vision was in black and white back when the episodes were first produced.
Why not do these remakes in color with state-of-the-art animation? The BBC would likely recoup additional costs with additional sales. Why waste a priceless rediscovered resource like this?

A personal observation: The poor animation seems to be primarily about the human characters. The Daleks look fine (probably much easier to animate).

Disc two (extras) has a short test animation. It has a blue tinge and the actual human animations are far, far superior to the final product. The blue touch (I feel) gives it a much more menacing and foreboding atmosphere.

It was created in April 2016 and I think this gives credence to the theory that corners were cut - either due to time or budget constraints (perhaps both). Whatever the reason, the BBC have only gone and shot themselves in the foot by including this and giving us a taste of what could have been.

Somebody over at the BBC seriously needs their arse kicked for this.

I missed this. Only saw the promo a day ahead of time, and I guess I got the time wrong in my head because when I went to watch it, it wasn't on. And wasn't on for the rest of the night, so it must have been an hour earlier.
