Ok so I feel like I need a story with swords, sorcery, castles and dragons all wrapped up inside. Sadly Pern, Liveships+co (ergo Robin Hobbs work and dragons) and Temeraire don't fit this bill and are already ones I've read/got on my radar. So I'm after something meaty that brings in some dragons who are more than just once-off appearances.

So has anyone got any recommendations for such a story that might be worth a read?

head on over to the Dragonlance series of books, quite a few of them feature scalies. Harry Turtledove has a series of books with dragons playing a large part. There are loads more out there but I can't remember them as it's been a long time since I've read them :(

Go to the source material and read The Mabinogion. Lots of versions. I like the Penguin edition. I would be surprised if it is not available gratis for kindle or online.

The Dragon and The George by Gordon R Dickson . Classic and comically funny.:D

Barbara Hambly "Dragonsbane"

Excellent dragon and magic and story. It is a crumbling empire story rather than a height of powers. Does have all the elements you want.
Two sequels.

Well I have a few for you to look at...

Halfbood Chronicles by Mercedes Lackey

Synopsis -

The world is dominated by elves, who came to the humans' world by a portal from their world, Evelon. The humans are treated as slaves and animals, but the elves have a good life. One thing mars their happiness, however - a prophecy spread by the dragons that a halfblood will come and bring about a revolution. Serina Daeth is the concubine of Elven-lord Dyran and pregnant with his child. Concubines bearing half-blood children to Elven-lords is not allowed, so concubines normally are given drugs in their food to prevent conception. Another of Dyran's concubines, vying for the top position, tampers with Serina's food, leading her to become pregnant. Serina escapes into the desert, where her child, Shana, is delivered by Alamarana, a dragonshaman who takes her home, where she is raised with Kemanorel, Alara's son.

Lost of dragons who play important rolls and who are active, speaking, self reliant and to be honest are the ones that end up saving a lot of peoples bums throughout the story.

Books of Stone and Water series by Daniel Fox

Synopsis -

Deposed by a vicious usurper, a young emperor flees with his court to the small island of Taishu. There, with a dwindling army, a manipulative mother, and a resentful population-and his only friend a local fishergirl he takes as a concubine-he prepares for his last stand.
In the mountains of Taishu, a young miner finds a huge piece of jade, the potent mineral whose ingestion can gift the emperor with superhuman attributes. Setting out to deliver the stone to the embattled emperor, Yu Shan finds himself changing into something more than human, something forbidden.
Meanwhile, a great dragon lies beneath the strait that separates Taishu from the mainland, bound by chains that must be constantly renewed by the magic of a community of monks. When the monks are slaughtered by a willful pirate captain, a maimed slave assumes the terrible burden of keeping the dragon subdued. If he should fail, if she should rise free, the result will be slaughter on an unimaginable scale.
Now the prisoner beneath the sea and the men and women above it will shatter old bonds of loyalty and love and forge a common destiny from the ruins of an empire.

Dragon Jousters by Mercedes Lackey

I second The Dragon and the George and its sequels

Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore feature excellent dragon episodes. Le Guin gets dragons.

Something that fits the bill incredibly well for what you describe is Peter Morwood's The Book of Years. I have only read as far as book 3, the Demon Lord, but it features plenty of swordsmanship, sorcery, castles, and a powerful and arrogant dragon. I'm quite fond of them - I keep meaning to acquire book - and it sounds exactly what the doctor ordered.

head on over to the Dragonlance series of books, quite a few of them feature scalies.

These and these again. Dragons return from legend to wage war on the world again. Do they signal the return of the old gods and what weapons can those gods give them to fight back? Still probably the most entertaining fantasy series I ever read.

I think remember that series , never read it . A world War fought with magic and dragons.
