Star Trek: Beyond (2016)

Star Trek Beyond. Good sci-fi adventure flickin the JJ reboot series with some lovely nods to ST the original series. A few things were not really well explained (or didn't bear much serious scrutiny) and do not watch this on your TV in the day time (when it comes out on home release) as there are considerable portions shot in darkness (a la GoT).

Score? Set phasers to stun

I noticed @Werthead giving this a very positive review on his blog - but I daren't read it as I want to minise both spoilers and expectations. :)

Either way, sounds like Simon Pegg has managed to do a good job with the script...

I'm looking forward to seeing this and it does look like a lot of fun.

Well, I'd say it requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief, but it was a good romp. :D The entire bit in the nebula is akin to Indiana Jones' lead-lined refrigerator, but if you posit that they did, in fact, survive all of that, the rest is good. I don't think that's too much of a spoiler, because, well, you know the crew tends to survive to be in the rest of the movie(s). :p

Lots of good Star Trek dialogue and familiar moments.

I really enjoyed this latest movie. I had been disappointed in the second Star Trek reboot movie because I felt there was too much anger in the crew and focus on revenge. But "Beyond" felt more grounded in Star Trek ideals of unity between different civilizations. It also had several direct references to TOS and its crew. Characterization was good as well. I enjoyed the Spock/Bones scenes, and felt that made up for another lack in the second movie.

Yes, Beyond is a 2.5 hour action/adventure flick with a plot more suited to a 45 minute TV episode. But it isn't boring, and I think it does do justice to TOS characters and themes.

Hmm. Mine was no more than two hours, and I think less than that. It started (officially) at 1:40, but of course there were half a dozen trailers before it really started, and the credits rolled at 3:45. Was I missing half an hour of footage? :D (I didn't miss it, if so.)

It was rather telling, watching the trailers that the industry thinks are movies to appeal to the Star Trek viewers -- Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, the new boxing movie -- whatever it was called, and then finally Sully. Now that looks like something, there. I cried during the trailer, so lord knows what the movie will do to me. But anyway, it was a bunch of action flicks, rather than anything SF or superhero.

As a totally irrelevant side note, the theater inexplicably had a poster for Pete's Dragon, in French. They seemed a bit puzzled by it as well.

You are right. It is 2 hrs 2 minutes, according to google. Maybe I am counting the whole time I was at the theater. ;)

Or the stretching of the plot to movie length just made it feel like 2 1/2 hours? :D

I got a kick out of the bit in Kirk's monologue at the beginning where he said their adventures had begun to feel episodic. :p

Did anyone else feel like the the theme "There's strength in unity" which was clearly the "deep insight" of the movie was undermined big time by the way that Kirk was so clearly the "First among Equals?"

True. It was pretty good teamwork for a while with everyone pulling their weight and contributing. But you knew it was always going to end with Kirk v Krall in some way.
Also, a promotion to vice-admiral 3 years into his first 5 year mission? What the what?!

I think JJ's given up on Star Trek since Star Wars did so well. The studio just doesn't seem to be interested any more either.
To which I say thank the celestial exchequer for that, since he never liked Star Trek anyway. Give it to someone who can appreciate it.

Well it is a space opera, after all. Let's face it, not only are Einstein's theories roundly ignored, so are Newton's laws. Oh, well. o_O Saw it today (finally) and, overall, enjoyed it a great deal. A couple of minor quibbles at the outset from this septuagenarian fan: The Barco version was not entirely satisfying. I'm someone who traveled to San Francisco in order to watch How The West Was Won in Cinerama in 1962. The lines between the right and the left images on screen were highly annoying. Shortly afterward, Cinerama went to a one film format which alleviated that issue. The new Star Trek Beyond brings it back again. Not only that, the cooling fans attached to the right and left projectors were downright noisy. But since there are only three Cinerama theaters still in existence in the world, I'll not lobby for anything more spectacular.

Getting beyond that, the story was vintage Star Trek action and derring-do. The heroes were heroic (Sofia Boutella as Jaylah was a hoot) and the villains were appropriately villainous. Idris Elba in various stages of make up was menacing in all his incarnations. Proper Homage to TOS without wallowing in it and decent character development in those few quiescent moments when it could actually happen. Kudos to the quintessential Star Trek geek, Simon Pegg for his work on the screenplay. Unlike my reaction following the previous film, I'm already looking forward to the next in the series.

Uhh, yeah, that was a bit much to swallow. Especially after he became a captain and got a ship straight out of the academy.

I enjoyed this one. No more kids barely out of the academy getting into trouble, but seasoned spacefarers who are reasonably comfortable in their skins. I also found Krall a more interesting villain than either Harrison/Khan or Nero.

This movie was much closer to what I expected in 2009, even if Justin Lin's action sequences were a bit too Fast and Furious for me.

I saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it - a good old-fashioned adventure romp. The camera work did make me feel a bit seasick though! A really nice homage to Leonard Nimoy in there too.
The characters were spot on as well I thought.
