A rare thing- a sequel that lives up to the original. This time Arnie plays the good guy, Edward Furlong the young leader of the resistance, Linda Hamilton returns as the obsessed Sarah Conner, and Robert Patrick excels as the T-1000.

SYNOPSIS:

In the year 2029, a computer called Skynet is fighting against a human resistance, after having nearly destroyed the rest of humanity in 1997. Skynet has found a way to send a Terminator back in time. This is the story of the Terminator sent to kill the resistance leader in 1994, while he is still a child. The resistance sends a reprogrammed Terminator back to 1994 to protect the young man. The question is, can they survive against the new prototype liquid metal Terminator while preventing the creation of Skynet?

Better than the original!

This film obviously couldn't exist without the original, but it is much better in a lot of ways:

i) The special effects - because they had improved and a bigger budget was available.
ii) A much more satisfactory ending.
iii) A real moral dilemma for the creator of the new microprocessor.
iv) A better villain - Edward Furlong is much more frightening, he's not just powerful, he's invincible!
v) Clever to make Arnie the good-guy.

umm Edward Furlong is the kid, you mean Robert Patrick ;)

And yes he is very good as the bad guy... the fight scenes with him and Arnie are very good, like in the back hall of the arcade...

yeah, and i'm hoping someone remembered to tape it for me tonight (well last night technically...)

i love arnie

he's great in this film

i like the bit end when he cuts open his arm

the liquidy person is really scary too

Terminator 2 - extended edition

************SPOILERS*************
I bought this film for my husband as a valentines gift (i try to give him what he wants rather than the traditional funny undies), and didn't realise it was the extended edition until I was actualy watching it.
Suddenly Kyle appears in Sarahs dream, and we were both sitting going ' hey, that wasn't there before'

I must say, for me, the original terminator was fantastic. I loved it. Two and Especially Three were just a waste of time and a muck up of the continum. I mean, the blank road scene at the end of two? i even looked for disney credits!

But these 'new' scenes have actually made it a lot more sensible as a movie.
for instance, the recuring dream of Kyle, always there, urging sarah on.
The re-programing of the terminator to be able to learn. (That for me was always a bit of trouble, how john had managed to re-program the terminator that he sent back). although the arrogance of the writers believing that if the machine simply could learn from humans he wouldn't want to kill them any more is still a bit of a tough pill to swallow. And the motivations of Dyson. These things actualy elevated it from very bad sequel just to cash in on the sucess of the original to bad sequel which involved some thought and planning to try to fit into the continum of the original and therefore to cash in on its sucess without alienating the core fan base.

But it could still have done with a different ending!

Re: Terminator 2 - extended edition

Hmm, I may actually obtain a copy of this and watch it. I was generally disappointed with T2 & T3 but if this makes more sense I'm game :)

Agreed!

I generally avoid sequels unless I read good reviews.

This is one of the few sequels that I can say is /at least/ as good as the original.

Though the firm Terminator has novelty, T2 has better effects -- while still having a good plot.

I found the video arcade an amusing window into the past.

I really liked the liquid Nitrogen scene. N2(l) makes some metals, e.g. steel, very brittle. One of my colleagues, when I was talking to him about a spate of thefts involving U-locks, said to me that, if he were to bust open one of them, he would use liquid Nitrogen and a hammer. I was amused.
