I just read, on another forum, that Greg Bear died, following heart surgery and a series of strokes.
A friend received a message from Raymond Feist that Bear was on his last legs. Following up, he sent a message to Bear's spouse, Astrid, and learned from her, that following Bear's instructions, as he had no chance of recovery or even of waking up, she had turned off his ventilator and that he died yesterday.
Greg Bear. A great writer and editor.
8/20/1951-11/19/2022. R.I.P.

Very sad, he was the cornerstone of my 1980s SF reading. Brilliant ideas and sharp SF, regularly blew my mind. Him and Iain M. Banks probably fired my own desire to write SF.

A great writer . very sad news RIP .:(

one of my favourite authors.

RIP Greg. You’ll be missed.

Blood Music is still on my tbr pile. I’ve only ever heard good things about it.

The Forge of God is one of my favourites.

The Forge of God , that's one I haven read. Ive heard good things about it

I've just this minute been on my Facebook, went to Greg's page, and clicked 'unfollow' because I know he'll never again pop up on my timeline with a new promotion or interesting snippet of news.

Farewell Greg, you will be missed.

Damn! I just heard about this when I spotted a blog from Alastair Reynolds about it on GoodReads. And last Friday I started his third book in the War Dogs trilogy, Take Back The Sky, which will be finished tonight! So I was mid way through what was, I think, his second to last book when he died. RIP.

I've probably read about half of his books and consider him one of the greats of hard SF. There were some that didn't work so well, but most were very good and some, like Blood Music, were quite exceptional. I might go back and read that one again now.
