For me it was between Astro pen and Bruce Maclean, with the Bruce coming just a bit ahead - because honour, if it does exist, must be a day-to-day thing about how we live our lives I think.
 
@The Judge gets my vote for conveying such an immense and solemn sense of occasion so powerfully.
A curious selection by me in some ways, given I watched less than two or three minutes of news coverage concerning this matter over those ten or eleven days.

I do like the 'Open' genre choice... gave me my two faves for the month - two that each captured the historical place, time and emotions of a particular moment in time.

I didn’t know if David Trimble and John Hume would be well enough known for the context to travel and it’s quite moving that they are. Trimble passed away recently and Hume a few years ago - and it was such a thing they pushed through, stepping over such a wide cultural divide and bringing their parties with them. But the honour in this was wider than them - but to a country who took the step of voting for peace, who agreed to forgive enough to free those who had hurt them and theirs in the pursuit of it.

The legacy is a generation who have been brought up without bombs threatening them as they shop and learn and work.

That’s pretty much longer than the story ;) :D

Thanks all for the wonderful stories. Bad luck on the extra word @Parson, I did enjoy your piece.

I don't think I did a great job of locating my story, but it was based on the history of repression of African culture in Brazil, particularly capoeira. Dragging behind horses was a real punishment meted out. (History facts!)
 
Congratulations, Jo! Terrific story. Honestly, I was surprised to be in the hunt on the last day. I liked my story, but I thought yours and a few others would run away with the voting. But it's always exciting to be close, at the end. :)

I know! That's the worst part, coming up with the next month's genre/theme pairing... it's so much worse than waiting for the final vote results! But, um, it won't cause you too much stress, I just know it!!! ;)

edit - Jo, I am just kidding. This is nothing to get stressed over, of course! :)
