Your Favorite films by Paul Verhoeven and Dennis Villeneuve?

Robocop was a terrific film and as was Total Recall My least favorite film by him is Starship Troopers. I absolutely hate this film .

Of Dennis Villeneuve, Im not greatly familiar with his work. I though The Arrival was well made film. But that said , I dislike the film and the lead character Dr Elizabeth Banks.
 
Verhoeven had a great Sci-Fi trilogy with Robocop, Starship Troopers and Total Recall and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite. Great visualisation and much violence, I thought they attempted to highlight a few social issues. I enjoyed them very much. The 82's was a great decae for great SF in my opinion.

I haven't seen much of Villeneauve's work, but I am very much looking forward to seeing how he visualises Dune. I recently rewatched Blade Runner 2049 and adored that movie, but do find it quite a harsh film to watch. I saw Arrival for the first time a few months ago. I struggled with the whole "language unlocking time" concept, so while the movie looked great, I ultimately found it a little silly.

I love Starship Troopers, but, when I saw the film I hadn't the Heinlein original to compare it with. Starship Troopers is a very funny movie, and the action is great - but I would treat it as something entirely different to the source material.

That period Robocop to Starship Troopers was Verhoeven at his best, and I miss his glorious subversion of action cinema. Robocop was probably his best.

For the lulz, i'd quite like to see a Villeneuve sequel to Robocop, although I think he might be a bit too portentous to pull it off.

Arrival was great sci-fi, but agree Banks wasn't a particularly compelling protagonist. Villeneuve is quite a cerebral director.

I didn't just care for humorous satirical take Verhoeven did with Troopers. I wanted Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers , and not Paul Verhoeven satirical reinterpretation .

Fair enough. I haven't read the book, but I enjoyed the original movie along with Robocop and Total Recall (a great, fun movie). The characters are all pretty much unlikeable, but I think that that was the point.

Prisoners is a gripping (if quite harrowing) movie, Arrival I couldn't get on with and Blade Runner 2049 - whilst better during the second watch - I never really enjoyed even half as much as the original.

The original Blade Runner just cant be topped by anyone . But I thought that Blade Runner 2049 was a very good story follow up. :cool:
 
For PV, I have trouble looking past Robocop. It was fun to watch and had something to say and said it well. All the cast were good but Peter Weller was close to tone perfect as the lead.
I think I have disliked [or at least not though very good] anything after and including Basic Instinct. People have told me it's a great film, but I don't get it.
And as for Total Recall, it just annoys the crap out of me for some reason.
Aside from Starship Troopers, I think has been all down hill. ST was violent enjoyable popcorn.
For DV, with only having seen Arrival and BR2049 it not much of a contest. Again I liked them both but BR2049 has the edge. It looked great even if it was an hour too long.

The only thing Basic Instinct had going for it was Sharon Stone . It spawned a seaquake Basic Instinct 2 which didn't fare so well with either the box office or critics.

Maybe that is the problem. Ms Stone is definitely very pleasant to look at [then and now] but in the film the character Catherine Tramell doesn't come across as someone you would be willing to die or kill for. But I know I hold a minority opinion on that.

The film is definitely overrated.
 
I think I have loathed every film by Paul Verhoeven that I have seen. Flesh + Blood and Hollow Man especially - but Showgirls is a classic. An absolute masterpiece of crap cinema.

Dennis Villeneuve - only seen Arrival which I adored and Bladerunner 2049 which I thought was sh*te -bored the pants off me (when it wasn't irritating the hell out of me).
