This series is set in Second Age, around thousand years before the events in the Lord of the Rings. The only connecting character might be Gandalf and certain High-Elves during this important age to the Middle-Earth and it was in this time, when the Numenor was thriving. In other words it would have been equivalent to the height of the Atlantis, but I doubt that we are going to see high technology.

Although the technology might be higher than in the LOTR as if I assume correctly the series will show the forging of the One Ring. In other words the series might show Sauron alive and in his prime. There might also be other legendary characters that are depicted in the Silmarillion. Additionally on the baddie side, we might see the Lord of the Nazgul, the Witch-King of Angmar in his prime as well as he was alive and well in the Second Age.

Thing is, nothing other than the Second Age can be verified, as all of the character names are still unlisted even though the series is coming on Amazon Prime at Sept 2nd, 2022. The filming for the first series was finished at August 2nd, 2021 according to this piece.

What do you guys expect to see in this series?

Eight episodes and, the cost for the series, One billion?:(

Well, they're going to reuse some of the assets for sure. But now that they've been built it's the question of how they're going to utilise them. Disney doesn't see any problems on expanding because they have the technology locked down. How much AMZ did put in to do the same is unknown but some of that money is going to be spend over a couple of series IMHO.

I also assume that they are challenging HBO's GoT with this series, so they had to invest some money to raise the par.

Thank you for the edit! I've been racking my brain and Googled 'GTO', wondering what great series I had missed!

My dyslexia is troublesome, but when I notice it, I'll do my best to correct it. The biggest problem is that often I read my piece after the forty five minute edit limit and then it's too late to do edits.

A lot of the comments reckon this is going to be ruined by being given the 'Hollywood' treatment

They did a great job with PKD's The Man in the High Castle and Expanse. So I wouldn't be too much worried as they need to surpass GoT in production. It'll be most probably fine, but purists won't like it. They are already challenged by the whole production with their "Hollywood" comments. Would they prefer to see quality like in that Soviet era LOTR miniseries? It was god awful.

For Amazon , the main target is to get more subscribers (obviously). It's bound to run at a loss, but Amazon seem to be able to afford it at the minute. If this pulls them up level with Netflix, it will all have been worth it; but I doubt it will. Seeing as it's almost 20 years since ROTK, some of the excitemnet is bound to have dissipated. Likely there is a whole generation of younger audience who have never seen any of the movies or read the books.

With this and Picard they are sorely tempting me. But there are just too many subscription channels these days, and not enough hours in the day to watch them all.

I'll probably wait for the Blu Ray boxsets , as that is the only possible hope they have of recouping cash.

My expectations are suitably low. I doubt I will appreciate many of the changes they'll inevitably make to the history. However, this leaves them wide open to bowl me over.

The last thing I would want is GoT style violence and titillation in Middle-Earth.

Or in the the style of Hercules and Xena.( two shows I loved):)

Amazon, aye? Hmm, initially leery. Then cautiously hopeful. Now, I'll just wait and see. I didn't shudder. Honestly, I didn't. Well, maybe just a tad.

If we are talking about the torture and rape in GoT, I don't they're going to feature in this series. But the thing is when you think about all the bad things that Sauron did when he was still an elf, a high-elf or a grey elf he went through betrayal and everything else. So there has to be a murder or four and most probably we'll see several different species getting chopped to pieces.

I also think that there is going to be a lot of costume drama and if they want, the acts of violence are hidden and only implied in the dialogue or drama. This whole thing makes me want to read the Silmarillion, or rather try it again as previous three attempts has failed as the whole book is rather hard to read.

What is wrong with the armies clashing on each other or do you mean individual things that one did to others?
The sadistic things individuals did in GoT. They could reference some of the terrible things done and perhaps give flashes, but I don't need to see true to life cruelty in any way. Big armies clashing is cool. Those are some of my favourite scenes from LoTR.
