The new season won't begin until February 28th!!!

If this keeps up, Season 6 won't start unti more than a year after Season 5!!

I don't want to read the spoilers so I haven't looked at the reports, but there are many details about Season 3 released already, which leads me to think that most of it is already produced. In which case, I don't understand the long wait.

Season 2 did end on a very strange note, and we do know that they have gone into the far future (from their perspective and from ours.) That is a very clever way of explaining why nothing about the USS Discovery is known in the timeline we are more familiar with, but how it all works out in the end, who can predict? Discovery has been a very unusual Star Trek show and little speculation that I read about it ever came true.

I suppose moving into the far future will make things easier for the writers, they won’t be restricted by existing Star Trek canon and can move the story in any direction they like.

That seems to be a trailer for people who have never seen the series before. It includes scenes from seasons 1 and 2 but I don't think it had anything from season 3. I can't be sure because there were scenes I've forgotten about, but I think I can place them within the first two seasons. Netflix have had the show since it first aired so was this trailer just released? I'm confused.

Try it now, I originally posted a trailer for series 1 by mistake, you must have been typing your response while I was editing it

Yes, it is a different link now, and you must have changed it very quickly within the editing window, but for me it stayed like that while I watched it, and replied, and then even longer in the browser cache. Sorry.

As regards to the season 3 trailer, it wasn't what I was expecting - for a start, Andorians?

Is there a date for this?

I understand them not wanting to clash with ST: Picard but I heard an April date. With Corona virus keeping people indoors, the audiences for TV has grown. They've stopped making some TV shows, but this is sitting in the can, ready and waiting to go.

Especially as it finished production in January. Filming began July 2019. I think the wait was simply so that two new Star Trek TV shows weren't running at the same time (though we have had that before without a loss of viewing figures.)

Still no release date. Apparently the team is working hard on post production remotely, in Los Angeles area because of the covid-19.

Working from home could slow Discovery season 3 post production
Most movie and television production in the USA and Canada has been shut down or put on hiatus during March due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19. However, production on the third season of Star Trek: Discovery was completed before these shutdowns, having wrapped up in Canada in February. The show is currently in post-production, much of which is done in the Los Angeles area, which is on lockdown by order of the State of California. But work is still being done remotely.

I suppose we should follow Wilson Cruz's advice, be patient and wait for the end of the lockdown in California.

I think they were making it up as they went along.
That's generally the way they write episodic TV fiction. You do know that Starfleet isn't real? j/k

We discussed at length here why making yet another prequel show rather than a sequel show was a very bad idea. According to SFX magazine the writers found it extremely restricting, so no surprises there. We also asked why Spock never talked about his famous sister, or why no one has ever heard of the Spore Drive, or even of the USS Discovery itself. Now they have finally seen sense, and explained everything away with a jump into the far future. Now the writers have a blank canvas to paint on, where nothing is like we have seen before. It is even way beyond the history written in Picard. They should have done that from the start. Everything about the series apart from this is still under tight wraps.
