Short story read in early 70s in yearly anthology about scientist ridiculed for building ladder into space, but after he starts climbing, it disconnects from Earth and he is lifted up by someone/thing at other end....

Anyone know title/author?

There was a story in Analog magazine (at least 6-7 years ago) about a man who climbs a 'beanstalk' up to the station in synchronous orbit-- there was a stairway, he had a spacesuit, and there were emergency shelters now and then so he could recharge/refill the suit, have a meal, etc. He makes it to the station. After finding he didn't fit in, he keeps climbing to the high end of the tether-- there's a ship there that was going to do some exploring--

I think there had been a cataclysm on Earth or something to make things more interesting.

Good try! But not old enough. I read this story in the 70s.

I'm thinking maybe author Paul Cook but I don't know why that's triggering my subconscious
Thanks for the idea! He's too young... unless he started publishing stories as a teenager. And I looked through his bibliography and didn't find a match.

Could it be something by Arthur C. Clarke? I know an above post lists a bunch of works that are both novels and short pieces, and the original poster said no to that list, but Clarke was really prolific. He used space elevators in some of his stories and novels, as shown above in that list, and I while I am not deeply familiar with his work, having only read the Odyssey novels, I know that he develops/expands upon a lot of stuff within his novels that he begins talking about in short stories, so maybe a Clarke short story? He was productive in the 70s, so, maybe...
