I liked The Light Brigade a lot (finished last night), I'm not a huge military sci-fi fan these days, but it's a good story nevertheless.

I've now begun The Vorrh, by Brian Catling. There's a foreword by Alan Moore which I didn't read because, as you might expect, it's half the size of the book ;)

you might but i just like Amazonia by him. The others not really. Don't ask me why lolo. it's like the books by brad taylor. never really got my interest.
 
Only nine titles finished in the last 8 days. I've really been slacking this last week. :)

"The Tyrant's Tomb," book 4 of The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan.
As already mentioned, this was the culmination of the setup for the humbling of Apollo. Great series, even if it is YA fiction.

"Midnight Blue-Light Special," "Half-Off Ragnarok," "Pocket Apocalypse," "Chaos Choreography," "Magic for Nothing," "Tricks for Free," "That Ain't Witchcraft," and "Imaginary Numbers," books 2 through 9 of the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire.
Just finished the latest in the series and it has taken a dark turn. Much darker than is normal for McGuire's urban fantasy work. If not for the latest in the October Daye series, this one might have taken over the top spot for "Favorite Series (at least for now)." It might have anyway, if not for the sudden, brutal cliffhanger ending. I hate cliffhanger endings with a purple passion.

Having a re read of The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. Its one of my favourite films, I remember seeing it as a teenager and being fascinated. Years later I read the book.

That's an interesting approach, I'll keep it in the back of my mind! I'm nearly halfway and am enjoying it far more than the first time and definitely more than The Dispossessed. It's a very different style from the trendy doorstoppers of today (more Broken Sword than LOTR), but it's sort of a perfect contrast to the Tad Williams I just finished.

Even when not sequential, the idea of jumping into the middle of series gives me the shivers. I'm still annoyed that they re-numbered the Narnia books!
 
It was actually Tad Williams who told me (not me personally, he was teaching a one day class on writing the fantasy novel and I was part of the class) that in fantasy sometimes the setting is one of the main characters. It made so much sense, fit a number of books so perfectly, that I remembered it, and later came to the conclusion that with some books the setting is THE main character.
 
I think I really enjoyed the first 4 or 5. Havent read any new ones for at least 10 years. He started to get less funny after that.
Jack Parlabane is an interesting character.

I felt much the same way when I saw 1917 several weeks back. The real star of the movie wasn't one of those two guys sent on that mission, it was No Man's Land. I felt like I was watching high quality video from another world.
