HBO have given the green-light to a prologue set 300 years before Game of Thrones, called House of Dragons, while cancelling another prequel set 5,000 years before gets the chop:

I think, for me, the most pertinent question is 'who will be the writers?' It doesn't seem to be clear in the article.
If it's Benioff and Weiss then I'm optimistic. If it's to be done by new writers then they've got very big boots to fill.

Also, I hope they release the pilot of the cancelled series sometime because I'm sure there are many (like me) who are curious about it.

Ryan Condal will do the writing (never heard of him.) Benioff and Weiss are off to Netflix.
Benioff and Weiss are grossly overrated as writers. The success of GoT comes mainly from GRRM's writing. Once beyond the books the TV-series became a mess. Still great TV, granted, but plotwise it became a disaster.

Benioff and Weiss come from the Zack Snyder school of writing in that they try to focus on moments with emotional impact and to hell with character and narrative. It's writing that leads to a hot wet mess

Given the rapid decline in the storytelling and dialogue once the show passed the books I don't think Benioff and Weiss are really desirable as writers. In fact a change may help.

Has to be watched! Really have to expect it to be nearer the last season of GOT quality rather than the excellent early seasons (and books). But still hopefully is entertaining. Having excellent actors is a good start.. Plus GRRM involved to some extent.

Surprisingly dragons not shown off at all in the trailer. Though there will be more to come.
