Disney To Reboot Alien Franchise, Ridley Scott May Produce

Picard sums up my feelings about this:

I'm just throwing this out there, and it's a bit wacky so bear with me here, but why not make something good and new instead of a bad copy of something old?
That's not the Disney way. Buy it, grind it up, mix in some unrelated ideas, spit it out as fast as possible, and wring every possible penny out of it. That's the Disney way.

It's all about the money... Money... MONEY

I loved the Alien films; Alien [first X certificate film I saw], Aliens [Game Over - becoming a catchphrase for life] and I even liked Alien3 and Resurrection. And I'm a huge fan of [early] Ridley Scott but the last two films have been a [not too] hot mess.

Ughh. Alien's not Spider-Man or some such, where you can reboot it endlessly. It's not the concept that matters as much as the actual, original film. This is like "rebooting" Casablanca.

They've already utterly destroyed Star Wars, to the extent that I have no desire to see this year's installment, or any further installment ever. From what I can tell, there was no creative impulse whatsoever behind the Disney SW restart. It was rather, "We have this property, let's tell some stories now about it that will get butts in seats and shift merchandise." That's it. No narrative urgency, no inspiration, just a mash-up of notions from earlier SW and generic action movie formulas, together with what they imagine fans might think looks cool. Why fans have fallen for it is beyond me.

Nostalgia sells.

But they've done a number on Star Wars. And that was a much bigger franchise.

I agree entirely about making new stuff rather than just endless recycling.

There are some great opportunities. With currently entrenched political division in many parts of the world, there's scope to tell a non-partisan sci-fi story focusing on the need for nuance, of not clinging to righteous purity at the expense of pragmatic realism (letting go for the Grail, as per the end of The Last Crusade). Or there's the threat/opportunities of modern technology, as we're seeing especially in China with social credit being used to deny thousands travel tickets because they're officially 'disapproved'.

Or a near future space race with a hint of warfare.

Yes, it would be really nice to see some stories in the mainstream that are not simply good guys vs. the Dark Side / Voldemort / Negan / the Upside-Down / generic Big Bad.

I can't say that I think this is good news. The last few movies have been pretty poor.

In my darker moments I suspect that humanity has peaked, and we are destined to just make inferior copies of things we've done before, each slightly worse than the last one, until we return to the stone age.

Surely every story ever told is just a bodged copy of the epic of Gilgamesh or a bodged copy of a bodge copy pf this ancient tale etc... :)

Actually I believe that the most complete version we know of this tale is actually a copy of earlier stories of different heros (who do similar sorts of things as big G and his hairy man sidekick - perhaps the first version of Every Which Way But Loose?)

Or Han and Chewie...

I'd be excited if they could reboot it for the Alien Wars; but that would require someone to read the original comics and keep somewhat faithful to them.

I don't know, its a bit like remaking most films; you can't re-create that suspense or surprise because its SO heavily known that the audience is waiting for it. Heck the original first birthing scene wasn't just a pure shock to the audience but to the actors as well, as many in the scene didn't know what was going to happen. But a scene like that is so heavily popularised and known and these are not films that vanished into nothing; you're not going to recapture it.

I do think that there is value in remakes at times, but I also think that its better to give things new titles and freedom to be their own thing. Both for the creators and for the audience.

Then again perhaps this means we can get another strong female lead! A lead who is tough without being goldlike; tough without being ex-military special forces trained and experienced; who is freaking scared out of her wits and yet pushes through. So perhaps there is that to look forward to.

Strong female lead? They'll cast someone who looks good as a doll - sorry - action figure...

Well that's... that's .... it's better than suoerheros... but... yeah, you go Disney! maybe hire ana actual SF writer for script.

I think we meed to be a bit more open-minded to the possibilities here folks. After all, recent Alien films have shown diminishing returns and a general poverty of ideas.

The franchise needs something fresh and Disney s in a good position to provide this.

Alien versus Shrek.

Let me get this straight - instead of moving forward with new worlds, new stories, new creators, they are rehashing the same tired old franchise?

Just... no.

How about... Space-marines go to a planet... the Aliens have overun it... they get trapped in a confined space, shoot off millions of rounds...
and, and, and... *

You can be Hicks and I'll be Hudson... Game over man! Game Over.
