Game of Thrones: 8.06 The Iron Throne

Well, considering where we were after last episode, that was ... decent. I’m not walking back on any of my previous judgements, but taking the season for what it is and considering we can’t change it, they wrapped that mess reasonably well.

It was pretty anticlimactic, but they’d resigned us to that since ep3, so no surprise there. And they setup about 20 spin-offs.

Ah well. Woulda-coulda-shoulda. I don’t think this world will have much gravity to it, compared to other series of this kind, but I really was expecting much worse. This was satisfying enough, and I guess that’s that.

*shrugs* At least we know I guess.

The first half could have been a half season in its own right. The second half was just cosy bickering.

Anticlimatic is the word alright but... yeah, I guess, kinda decent. As long as nobody makes me think what could have been.

I thought it was fine, made up for some awkwardness in Ep 4 and Ep 5.
Didn’t undercut my expectation about Dany, so that’s disappointment.
They did figure a way to defuse what I thought would be a knot, so that was surprising.
So the whole deal with Tom Wlaschiha and Faye Marsay was a fake spoiler? I am not happy with that.
No Hot Pie
No Nymeria
A lot they could have done with an extra 10 min.

Daenerys prevented from spreading her freedom dust around the world. Arya sails off into the West. Will this hit a little too close to home for some Americans?

Jeez. First half quite well done. Second half couldn't have been any duller. At least it wasn't super cheesy. Not bad considering previous recent episodes. But the Lord's choice scene made no sense whatsoever.
And the Northerners would follow the Stark on the throne..

Dany was beyond salvation in the show. Her death was inevitable. I don't see how Yara gets to judge Jon Snow. Sentenced to the night watch for always doing the right thing... . Left a bad taste in my mouth. The only reason i can somewhat accept it, is because grey worm had jon in his power. Not sure how that happened though. Drogon flew off. Jon could have just regrouped with his northern army. The only reason i see Jon allowing himself to be captured is guilt towards dany, but then later they portray him not liking having to live in excile not having a family of his own. It seems they needed a vehicle to introduce the starting point of democracy through bran and Tyrion all the while shafting Jon (and the Targaryen family). Targaryens even more shafted when it is implied that Bran will find Drogon. Better to let drogon live were he wants. He is the last of his kind at the moment, but there do exist creatures similar to him. As for Jon, I hope he breaks his new night watch vow and starts a live amongst the wildlings with a normal family. which is what he always wanted really. I hope that last shot is what the show implied Jon will do. Just live north of the wall with the wildlings. Cause lets face it, without the unsullied holding Jon, who could stop the north from fully cementing their power. Reach has no real leaders (which is the only reason i can accept Bronn as lord of highgarden, as if all the lords in the reach that are left are just okay with this...). Yara iron's islands can't have much left to give at this point. Dorne is some unknown guy, and i don't see the dornish doing well outside of Dorne. Who know if the westernlands would follow Tyrion. The rest are more or less allies. Riverrun, Eyrie, Storm's end. Not sure on Tyrion, he is probably fine with Jon as king. Happy for Arya, happy for sansa. Bran as zombie king is stupid imo. Why is sam a maester? What about Gilly and the child?

Ending was good enough, but very mediocre imo. Oh, i also like that in the end it was once again Jon that stepped up and did what was right. Even when it was wrong.

I had begun to see Drogon as an evil beast, but his anguished reaction to Dany’s death was touching.

The fact that Drogon turned his grief-induced fury on the Iron Throne instead of Cousin Jon indicated that he understood of the real forces at play and possesses an intelligence I had not suspected.

I don’t know what dragons do with the bodies of their human mothers when they fly off with them. If dragons are sentient beings, I imagine some sort of ritual would be performed.

Question: who has a better story than Bran?
Answer: lots of people

I'm fine with Jon not sitting the iron throne, perhaps not sitting the iron throne makes him happier in the long run. But he still deserved a better ending. Like him living with the wildlings (now it feels ambiguous on wether he lives with them or will hold his NW oath.)

But Bran as king is just dumb for me. It's like the showrunners needed someone whom no one would complain to much about after they decided to remove both Jon and Dany from the board. So now we are led to believe Bran didn't want to be lord of winterfell cause he had already decided to be king? What is with him telling Jon he is the true heir? a long play against his nephew? Sansa probably would not have worked cause she is too much just another lordling intent on ruling and they wanted to portray the wheel was being broken, but it's still dumb.

Then we have grey worm and his unsullied, he is portrayed as an uncomprising loyal to dany to the end killer after missandei dies. Dany is killed by Jon. Yet Greyworm does not kill Jon on the spot? really! this is the same dude we just saw killing surrendered lannisters gueardsmen and he keeps jon captive after discovering he killed dany... and pigs can fly. Jon getting captured was a dumb get out of jail move to get to certain objectives like answering the greyworm , unsullied and dothraki dillema, planting the seeds of democracy, and other stuff. What is he going to do in Naath anyways? Die by butterflies?

That is the biggest unexplained anomaly. Apparently Dany was alone in the throne room because Dragon was guarding her? No one else.
Slagging the throne would have been quite a commotion , so what if Grey Worm had shown up , gone after Jon, but was stopped by Drogon, who had already given Jon a pass because of Targ blood? That would have thrown Grey Worm into confusion to spare Jon until something could have been figured out.

I'm less fussed about the anomaly (although it is sloppy writing) than the fact we didn't get to see what would have been an awesome dramatic scene.

Yeah, there is too much of that last two seasons. It's like between fade to the next scene there is a tip-in card that says "A lot of stuff happens."

Considering the extended buildup of Dany's threat to Jon, I thought that the knife would be Jon when the pair separated. Her death coming so early in the episode made me wonder what they would do with the remaining time.

I would have felt the same. All those streets, taverns, shops, places, even brothels turned ashes. It would make any dwarf angry and bitter. Sacking dwarves home city is certainly a way to get Book of Grudges - not that there is a such thing in the Westeros.

Tyrion didn't even had a bottle of wine with him to make the journey easier. He had nothing, when Tyrion explored the palace, and its underground chambers to find his brother .. and sister. The first time he was asking wine, was when they had thrown him in the dungeon.

For being a wise dwarf Tyrion continued being ill prepared for his fortunes. He should have know that he was going to end up locked. At least he acknowledged that Varys was right and he was wrong. He also rightly asked, "Would have burned the city?"

I believe that to most of us the answer would have been, "No."

It's just when you look back in the history, this same thing has happened, most recently in the Iraq War, and things haven't really changed to better since. Nobody really misses the president who started it. Nobody is going to miss the Mother of Dragon's. Not the Mad Queen, but the one who came across the Narrow Sea to liberate the Westeros from the shackles of the Iron Throne.

The only Hitler reference I want to put in is the July 20th Plot, where his own men tried to take his life. It was a failure. Close call, but failure still and it proves that there are only very few occasions, where you able to assassinate a leader.

I'm glad that Jon saw the reason and understood that it was the only time he could have done it. Otherwise he could have as well turned Vader. The way he did it, outrageous and possibly the hardest way to kill another, with a kiss on lips of your lover while you stab them in the chest.

Drogon, the Wise, did the right thing and burned the Throne to slag. Nobody is going to sit in it. I did fear that he would have taken Jon, and in a way, he would have been in his right. That throne was not an evil thing, but it was cursed as it made people to do horrible things.

Now there is going to be peace as the Long Winter settles over the Westeros. Bran is the right choice to lead the Westeros. All hail Bran, the Broken.

I love that Bran's first action was making Tyrion his Hand. I also love that Jon end up back being in the NightWatch. He will be good leader in the North, and it will be proper place for him to contemplate the past. And this way he'll be back with Ghost. All hail King of the North.

If they'll ever do the spring book, they should do it in ten years, giving enough of time to GRRM to finish his Magnum Opus.
