Star Trek: Discovery

has been renewed for a third season, Variety reports. Additionally, there will be a small shift in the show's leadership. Current writer and producer Michelle Paradise will be promoted to co-executive producer, running the show alongside Alex Kurtzman.

In a statement, Kurtzman hyped Paradise's credentials:

Michelle joined us midway through season two and energized the room with her ferocious knowledge of Trek. Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive, and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the Trek legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I'm proud to say Michelle and I are officially running Star Trek: Discovery together.​

I never doubted that it would get a third Season. Do you think that the addition of Michelle Paradise explains why they are now trying to correct or mitigate some of the inconsistencies that there were with Star Trek? I'm not sure they need to bother, as there are so many continuity errors among all the Trek series anyway, and to have restricted the technology to a 'retro-futuristic', would have been bonkers.

I thought they ended the Klingon War far too abruptly and quickly last Season. Maybe that was because of contracts i.e. Jason Isaacs. I'm in two minds about doing that with the story arc this Season though. This search for Spock has gone on far too long and may even turn out to be a red herring, but I like long arcs and to meet the red angel and tie everything up by Season end once again would be too convenient.

I do agree that the Klingon War was quick. but then again that was showed only from one ship POV and they couldn't drag the mushroom stuff from season to season. Er ... they did. I don't expect them drag the Red Alien stuff to another season, but I'm certain that it's history, like the Sphere Data-Bank will continue as plot-devices to other seasons.

In a way they are making USS Discovery to be like Tardis, the magical blue box, that can go between dimension to anywhere in Cosmos. But they are not falling into the "sonic-screwdriver-saves-your-day" type of story telling as CBS crew is trying their hardest to bring in an arc that lasts a season rather than a few episode.

I personally like that, but I know that dragging on the spock-encounter in angering the fans. The Discovery crew has done a marvellous job considering that that they inherited all that package from the previous series and flopped JJA movies. Against that they've done well, as ST brings in 20 million viewers steadily to watch it opening and it continues to pull in a lot of people, especially through the Netflix connection.

I don't want it to go away, because I like that different, utopistic future that Star Trek offers. Roddenberry's vision was a bit darker and might have not reached into Fantasy pocket as ST has done in these two past seasons.

Educationally they have done well, as ST has brought in a lot of concepts as scientifically accurate as they can be, but in practical terms, they are doing badly. Take as an example Tilly's accident with the "Dark Matter" meteor. She did all the sampling alone, even though Tilly knew that it was going to be dangerous, and then because of all the goofiness that ensued Discovery had to put its crew and another ship in danger.

That is not how you do business if you value your ship and its mates. Not talking about all the scientific package. But in the drama terms it worked. It got the audience in verge of tears and anger. Same thing happened with latest Saru centric episode.

In that way, they are doing as good job as TWD, because they get the audience worked out. But bringing in new people it is not doing as good job as the Expanse. CBS surely knows that AMZ product is better and it keeps buzzing people more than their product.

So, I applaud the CBS executives and the production team members as they have a good series in their hands and they can do better with it in the long run, if they keep granting it more seasons. At the back of my head is a little demon that is saying: "They are going to cancel it, because that's the norm. Nothing lives forever."

I don't think there was ever a doubt about a 3rd season. It's the flagship of their streaming service. It would have to fall on it's face, hard, to get the ax this early. Most of it's issues have been minor. I like way more about the show than I dislike. I like all the plot elements they are using. The fungus highway, the mirror empress, section 31 and captain Pike are all great. The Spock thing has dragged a bit but I'm still with it. The only thing I dislike are the Klingons (and everything they've done with them). Any other issues are merely annoyances. If the new show runner has actual knowledge of Star Trek it should only make things better.
