Uncompromising Honor: The Best Honor Harrington Book? (No Spoilers)

I don't remember Dominic Flandry or any of the 'Technic' series being badly rated, they are high space opera , like I said pitched beyond Star Trek level. Never heard that before.
I think @Parson was not referring to how they were rated in their day, but rather how they are rated now on somewhere like GoodReads. And I'm afraid I think they are far more dated than any of the other series you have mentioned. However we have had this discussion before so I won't push any further than that. Just to say that I consider that Anderson wrote many books that were much much better than these.

I wasn't looking exactly at the Technic series. I was looking at what was termed the "Dominic Flandry" series.

Flandry Series by Poul Anderson

Well... those ratings are mostly 3 and 1/2 stars which seems good enough to me, I would have given them 4 stars in most cases. No five stars in the group. Anderson has five star novels tho not sure any of the Technic history has any of those. I think the stories could be better , have always liked how the world building in the Technic series is well thought out. I always give Anderson's Technic history as an example of how well modern space opera evolved away from the more clunky E E Smith works.
All this was mostly due to John W Campbell , under his guidance space opera in Astounding moved to more verisimilitude and viability. Some of these aspects were borrowed by Star Trek and even Star Wars (alas SW fell back on more adolescent and comic book themes).
In this times The Expanse is a full realization of all that Lived-In science fiction space opera that appeared on the pages of Astounding between 1950 and 1960.

I must admit I do not look at Good Reads all that much, but if I am looking to buy a book from Amazon I don't generally look at anything under 4 stars if it has 100 ratings or more. Especially that is so if the book is not a Kindle Unlimited book.

on the other hand think how much you have to discover and enjoy

Is this an Honor Harrington book? She makes a couple of cameo appearances?

@Parson
Thank you very much for the review, much appreciated. :giggle:

I was very much on the fence about buying the books, as the latest installments in the Honorverse were somewhat disappointing. I just dislike to have to read used content.

Seeing your endorsement, though, I took the plunge and ordered. And it makes sense, too, having read all the other books in the series.

However, I‘ll take a lot more convincing concerning the new Safehold book. That series has really deteriorated. It‘s just so hard to give up on a series after so many pages. I wish Mr. Weber would just remember his qualities as a writer - and get a better editor, while he‘s being virtuous.

I've just finished Through Fiery Trials, the latest Safehold book. I was wondering just where DW was taking the series after At The Sign of Triumph, the one before, and I was pleasantly surprised. Less war, more consequences and a sting in the tail. I agree, though, he really needs to get a stronger editor - I don't mind the waffle personally, (having grown up in an era where descriptive passages were commonplace compared to some of the pared-down stuff I read today) but I can see where some people would get bored quite quickly.

I agree wholeheartedly! I truly believe you will be pleased with Uncompromising Honor. I am still only marginally interested in the latest Safehold novel.

@pyan I am really impressed with your tolerance.

@pyan
Waffling and long-winded, yes. But that is something that I would chalk up to the author‘s agenda. But there were more and more mistakes and inconsistencies in the later books that any professional proofreader should have caught.

Well, I didn't read any more HH novels or short stories (wherever in the canon they might sit), or re-read any of the novels I had read (even in the current situation, life's too short), before I read Uncompromising Honor.

On the whole I really enjoyed it and, because I'd forgotten a lot about the various improvements in military technology described in the books I'd read before, I think I was as surprised by some of the things that happened as the various Solarian League Navy COs, something I see as a definite bonus, as I both like surprises and prefer it when (and particularly when my memory eventually tells me that) those surprises have not been pulled out like rabbits out of a hat.

I don't recall the previous books being quite so obsessed with people's heights to the nearest centimeter (either directly or in comparison to others'), but perhaps Weber was trying to cast what would be an enormous series of movies (or season upon season of a spectacular TV show)... which would really be a futile exercise, given that producers have their own ideas on who they'd like to cast. I do recall some of what I myself see as padding... but then Weber has an enormous cast of characters and he does like to flesh them out, however long (or not) they might be around.

But most of all, I think Uncompromising Honor provides the sort of ending I would have liked to see: most of the big ends tied up to a reasonable degree and the ones that weren't quite as tied up aren't sitting there like cliffhangers demanding the fast appearance of another novel in the series.

So I'm glad I read it, and I'm glad Weber delivered what I hoped, but didn't always suspect, he would. :)

I'm glad to see the good reviews, I'd actually started reading this a year ago and somehow misplaced it after a few chapters. Then I got distracted watching and reading other things...weird, for me! I have found it and will have to start over now, as I don't remember what I read. :LOL: I've spent so much time reading this series, I've literally grown up (old?) with it...perhaps I subconsciously didn't want to read the last book and have it end. :unsure:
