9.08: The Walking Dead - Evolution

No one saved a seat on the chopper for Jesus.

Dave, yes that would make sense. If they are not a cult then the Jesus killing may not make sense in retrospect. If you want to take over a village you don't expose yourself in front of several fighters. As CTG says the practicality of how they survive amongst the Walking Dead has to be glossed over. They would really only be able to join for several hours. Perhaps longer occasionally if they eat and sleep a lot the day before. Perhaps the ones who go amongst the Walkers are drugged. How whispering from inside the horde can change direction more effectively than an alarm clock (without the whisperer being killed) also should be glossed over. The Walkers are in kind of a confused state.

It's not whispering that changes the direction. You saw how they pumped on the stragglers and changed their direction after the banging stopped. The whispering is communication between each other more than trying to scare others.

Gabriel forgot to lock the door. When he was untied he could have walked out anytime. It was deliberate. Negan just wound up Gabriel so much that he genuinely forgot.

Plus, six years in that cell would have taken their toll on his physical condition -- in the real world, anyway

Well, he is at least somewhat institutionalised. So, if he would return back in after his stintch run in the freedom, I wouldn't be surprised. Not really. But I am also expecting him to join the Whisperers and form an alliance, because he doesn't know anything better.

I was reading some peoples comments on the Jesus death. Quite a lot complaining that Jesus was killed without having explored much of the character's character and skills, while a so far dull character like Tara lives and has a significant role.
I somewhat agree in that it is good to do some surprise kills, but you have to be careful about killing off the interesting characters.
Well, as long as we have Daryl and mad Carol. :)

Yeah there is a blacksmith after all.

Blacksmith isn't the same as a the armourer. But, taken that it is the best invention against stabby things and the zombie teeth, why people haven't adapted to wear it again? Why do they keep risking their lives for wearing hollywood armour?

That reminds me. I would have thought more of them would have some of that heavily protected swat/riot police type gear when they venture out. Probably some police stations have it. Like in an earlier season. Perhaps another community has loads.

In the comics Rick went and got full SWAT gear for him and Aaron, before Carl got stuck with Negan. But they didn't develop or acquire anything heavier than boiled leather armour with some studdings. In the AMC's TWD, hockey armour and some plate carriers has been the thing. Nobody has bothered even making a ring armour, or tried to do a scaled leather armour.

I know it takes time and a lot of tobacco to make a chain mail but they had six years of relative peace before this Whisperer crisis turned in their doorstep. Surely, if they bothered to go to the national museum to nick some seeds, they could have popped to acquire heavier, better armour.

In fact, if they had raided the DC museums for models of medieval armour and weaponry it would have made more sense than stealing a plough. I am still stunned by the raid and it was the only venture into the Capital wasteland that we have seen. Why can't they talk in the dialogue about the other raids they've done in the place? Or make one right now, because there's a huge horde coming in their way, obviously.

If it's a dangerous place, I would rather that they showed us it's so dangerous that there is no point going in there until all zombies has rotten away. Even zombies have a lifespan (I'm not talking about that tree zombie, which had a worm infestation and a birds nest).

Hey guys,

So the series looks to be getting interesting again - I mean the Whisperers dont make much sense but I suppose the show had to do something and they could be great fun.

I would definitely have taken some sort of full ring mail or plate mails from that Museum. A lightly armoured knight should be able to take out a ridiculous amount of walkers. If you could create a core group of 50 people in full plate with horses in full plate you could literally ride through a horde almost. Or even just ground shock troops.

I don't get why they are not actively horde hunting.... If you leave the hordes alone they are just going to get you or others at some point, and then what if they keep joining and joining until eventually you have a million of them, that aren't just a horde they literally flatten everything.

They need to get more proactive as an alliance to bring them together and increase their survival. People would die but it would be worth it in the long run and secure the future for the children. Now those whisperers are about the hordes become unpredictable.

I don't get it either. I also don't get that they haven't done more defences during the last six years. There are no moats. Not walls. Nothing to really guide the moments of zombies masses and possibly eradicate them. Maybe they will make a band of armed people and then sent them out for the horde hunting. They don't need most powerful guns as the zombies aren't protecting themselves with bullet proof armour. So a simple .22 rifle could be as devastating as a proper heavy cavalry charge. A ten people marksman team with suppressed weapons and adequate amount of ammo could easily chew through a horde made out of hundreds of zombies. If you're a whisperer hiding among them, what are you going to do when the dead start dropping around you?

I would only ask "why?" There doesn't seem to be much of an advantage to it, unless they mean to wipe out the three colonies and then take their places. But there can't be enough of the mask wearers to take over the three colonies and run them.
The walker hordes are an abundant natural resource in the apocalypse, and weaponizing them against the remaining living is a masterful military tactic. Yet, the purpose behind the move is a big question mark.
Are the whisperers just soldiers serving a larger community seeking to expand its domain? If they succeed, what will happen to the horde army they've assembled?
Most importantly, will walkers be discharged and given full veterans' benefits in the new society?

Therefore, if you're wearing on those skinsuits in the horde, and a community fighters open fire upon you, how do you prevent them from shooting you as a walker?
Shooting the whisperers would be the best way to defeat them, like shooting Redcoat officers during the American Revolution (if The Patriot is to be believed) disrupted English troops. Assuming spotters could identify which walkers were the impostors, snipers could take them out; and the horde would revert to its normal, shambling behavior patterns.

They could use very old school tactics, by forming a stacked shootlining, where you leave you spot as soon as you have to reload and move at the back row and still be effective. The dead aren't shooting back and heaviest things that Whisperers seem to carry is knives. You wouldn't need an actual snipers, but reliable shooters who can hit the mark with small calibres without the need of projectile being overly effective penetrator. Removing the supersonic crack, a gun can silenced enough so that the sound disappears into the background noise.

No noise. No additional shambleres coming to the operation area ... unless they're guided by whisperers. You could do this with bows and arrows, but personally I think an archer needs a lot more training then making a normal marksman (not sniper).

To make a sky blanketing arrow cloud you need so many archers and I don't think there are enough of them in the Rickland. A moat would be a very effective way to protect the community and none of the Rickland communities are large enough to not have a moat. But even if you cannot find motivation to make a moat, a Vietnamese spiketrap is far easier to make, and in the theory you could easily have tens of thousands of them around the communities, making them an effective barrier but it wouldn't stop a horde, just Whisperers.

Yeah Hilltop just seems to be an open road leading to the community wall. I think the other communities too. Doesn't seem like places that are designed to be long survivor homes in the apocalypse.
At least no one has come along with serious artillery.
