DISCUSSION -- November 2018 -- 85 Word Challenge

Not sure why you'd be sorry that you wrote early, or even that it posts early for that matter... Doesn't seem like that would materially affect the outcome. I mean, you could have written that 75-word reindeer space opera ages ago.

Well I for one think it's goes beyond presumptious. Suppose we have a change to the rules again. The success of the extra ten words may be permenant. Reindeer stories might be banned by the topic picker. All mention of decemberish events could be ruled out as "speculation"

No, one should have the decency to wait until the contest is announced and the topic given.

Then spend at least three or four days (20 or so in my case) of hair pulling, biting bails and sleepless nights before even attempting to think of a title, let alone actually writing the story.

To write the story days in advance and worse smuggly tell all of us they've done so, shows IMO an appalling lack of concern for us hairless ones. It's like a slap in the face with a wet cod.

Well, I'm one for the level playing field, and all of that. People who can actually read a calendar (unlike myself) might know to not seek out the December story thread till it's actually December. ;)

And some might not evenknow what a calender is.

Or what day it is for that matter.

I hope I didn't sound presumptuous; mainly, I was just surprised it wasn't December.
Everyone writes differently, of course; I come up with ideas quickly, and my weird mind forces me to write them up immediately...sad thing is, they're not always good ideas. But the theme gave me a story right away. I hope everyone else has similar luck.

Similarballs. It is a weird truth for me as a scribbler/reader, that the hasty word can sometimes read back as satisfying as hours of lettery turmoil. Horses for courses I s'pose... and maybe a bit of Christmas excitement in there? Sings - The holiday is coming - holiday is comi... Suh-lap!!

*hits him on the side of the face with a wet cod*

Everybody abuses cod!!

Hey, I have to deal with a Santa themed golf tournament tomorrow and a wife who loves Christmas. I can live with the theme because something bad is probably going to happen in many stories to Santa and crew. Then we have people breaking out into a Christmas musical here on the Chrons? Must we!? And then there is the Saints and Cowboys game, and, and...

...ok, fine, the cod didn't need to be plucked out of the water and used for slapstick comedic effects. My apologies to cod everywhere.

*slaps @Graymalkin in the face with a wet tuna*

Everyone happy now?

In any case, you should not have been using a real cod.

I'm rather disappointed -- this being a website for writers -- that you don't realise that Gadus morhua received its current popular name solely because cod versions of this species of fish were created specifically for use in the noble pursuit of slapping people in the face with a fish. After all, those wishing to participate in this pursuit can't be expected to haul a real fish, let alone all the equipment needed to keep it in good condition**, on the off chance that an opportunity to wield it might arise.

** - A face slapping where the fish disintegrates would not only be awful in itself but would -- a far worse matter -- risk bringing face slapping with a fish into disrepute.

Well, tuna do tend to be snarky...
And not even PETA cares about them. The rallying cry was always "The dolphin's caught in the tuna net! The dolphin's caught in the tuna net!" What about the tuna? Not a word in their defense. If not even PETA likes them, I think they can be used for slapstick relativity safely...

Fair point...

*slaps @Graymalkin with a wet Gadus morhua as well*

A word of warning to would be fish abusers (and their victims caused by the use of).

The species of fish is of little concern, except to the fish of course

However, it is ESSENTIAL that the fish is wet.

Dried fish requires a completely different protocol, and the swiping action also has to be modified to allow for both the sharpness and brittle nature of dried fish.

It's one thing to have your head taken off accidentally in a tragic wet fish incident, but quite another to be decapatated by a stiff portion of Skate.

Many are those that flounder in cages for not taking care to ensure a fish is suitable for porpoise.

You could use this...

*hands you a wet noodle*
Hmm... is it an ill tempered noodle?

Absolutely. You will note that every fish I have slapped @Graymalkin with has been suitably wet. Anything else is just in poor taste...

Right! JJ - hold still. Aaaaaaannnndddd -

Merry Fishmass!!

Behave, abusing fish is wrong in any form.

Me locking you in a room with Wally until you learn to play nice is perfectly ok.
We aren't abusing fish! We are abusing one another with fish! Big difference...
